Just sequels. So if part five of a franchise manages to be better than the first, it doesn't matter. Just interested in the second being better than the first.

Oh. I suppose you were.
Alien and Terminator are both much better films than their original. I'm still not seeing anything concrete.
This however isn't clear. I'd assume you mean "Alien and Terminator are both much better films than their respective sequels", but then you'd be wrong according to popular opinion.

Look at your quote. Now look at mine. Sadly, your quote isn't mine, but if you watch Adventure Time, it could SMELL like mine. I'm on a rainicorn!

I'm not talking about popular opinion, though. I mean obviously T2 is more popular because it's more kid-friendly. Watch Terminator again as an adult and you'll realize it's the better film. Likewise with Alien, it's more slow and prodding, but it's widely agreed upon as one of the best sci-fi/horror films ever conceived, and is a large point of study in film theory classes. It's just much more legendary.
What I'm looking for is not anyone's own opinion on what movie they like more, but a solid sequel that every critic would agree is a better overall film.

So you think Batman Begins > The Dark Knight?
No, but it still kind of bothers me because it's a reboot of a franchise. In many ways, you could consider TDK the 6th in the series... I don't know.
Reboots shouldn't count. that being said. Spider-man 2>Spider-man The dark knight>Batman Begins(notice the word begins. think of it as its own set of movies about a character with the same name) *the following is not meant to be taken seriously* Attack of the clones>The phantom menace.

Not a sequel. It's the second half of one movie.

...No it's not?
Sure it is. Its thematically linked and stylistically linked. Plus there is continuity between characters (in particular Michael Madsen's character and John Trevolta's characters are brothers)

Being set in the same universe, with no actual in-film link, does not make something a sequel.

It's not a sequel. That's like saying Stephen King's It and The Stand are sequels.
Cars 2! ...Look, I thought it was a good movie, okay. Maybe my expectations were just that low after the first Cars sucked. On the Pixar front, Toy Story 2 also works.
I'm surprised it took so long for Wrath of Khan to come up. After Terminator 2, Wrath of Khan is like the next sequel I think of when I think of sequels that are vastly superior to their original.
I like the original Terminator, but Terminator 2 kicks its ass. Sorry.
Also as far as my contrarian opinions go, the best Star Wars is the original. A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back are like my #1 and #2 favorite movies of all time so it's not saying much, but I feel like I'm the only person on earth who believes A New Hope is the best.
