GAF is usually fine, but like most places, once they become hyped about something if anything attempts to lessen that hype they will respond like this. At the very least, I don't think anyone is calling for the head of the reviewer, so this is some magnitude better than the 8.8 thing.

The sum of Uncharted 3's parts make it worthy of a higher score than an 8/10. Based purely on what I know right now, without having even played the single player campaign, I know this. Anyone reviewing videogames today knows this.

Man, it's amazing how ass-backwards the gaming community is when it comes to reviews. A game can get 100% positive reviews, and people will complain about the positive reviews not being positive enough. Just imagine how bad it'd be if the video game world was anything like film in terms of reviews; after all, film reviews tend to be much more honest, and negative reviews are much more commonplace. Even the most acclaimed films end up having a few detractors, whereas very few hyped games end up having less than 100% approval from critics.

In other words: if Armond White reviewed video games for a living, he'd probably be dead by now. :P

Owned, every one of them.

This 8/10 business once again makes me wonder why gaming review ratings are so inflated compared to other things. if a movie or a music album gets and 8/10 it usually means it's excellent and whenever I got an 8 in (european) school I'd be really happy too since it's along with 9 and 10 (which never happens) the top tier grades.

"The way we design the Uncharted games is a very deliberate creative choice on our part," he said. "We've said many times in public we don't think it's the only way for video games to go. Indeed, when you look at Rockstar's games, whether it's Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption or L.A. Noire, those three games map out very distinct creative approaches to storytelling action games, which are quite distinct from what we do, but which we think are magnificent, and push forward the form in very important ways. Those games are so well crafted, and they take quite a different approach than we do.

"I don't think anyone at Naughty Dog thinks ours is the only approach. We love the diversity of approaches to storytelling in games. We're just trying to do what we've chosen to do as well as it can possibly be done. Hopefully, when people play it they'll agree we have made a leap forwards in Uncharted 3.

Lemarchand admitted that he cares about review scores "more than I should", but wished they didn't exist. "I've said for a long time it's rather a shame we have to give video games scores in reviews," he said. "It's just part of the way things are done, isn't it?"

"On the upside, video games journalism has made great strides in the last few years towards a more mature kind of criticism that at the end of the day helps players figure out whether they as an individual are going to enjoy a game or not. That's what's most important.
