I pretty much love all four of them equally. I've tried to rank them in the past, i always put 3 in front, but now that i think about it, it's impossible.
MGS1 has the nostalgia and the freeflow gameplay and no matter what anyone says, MGS>>>>>>>>>>>>TTS MGS2 has probably the best gameplay but a wtf story. I loved **** like shooting the oranges and stuff. MGS3 has the best cutscenes ever and awesome gameplay. and the best cutscenes ever. MGS4 is different. I've played through it only twice, but even though the gameplay is more polished than the others, the movies are so long. Then again, I haven't teared up as much in any game as i have in MGS4
I like all the games equally. You probably do to. stop ranking them. You know they are all equally as awesome.
That's the thing, i used to try to rank them, but I thought about it for a while, and it's just stupid to rank them. They are all amazing in their own way and all equally as good

It has a lot to do with gameplay in my opinion. All four have amazing story, but then the gameplay itself lends to some discussion. I know I'm playing Snake Eater right now (for a while now...big backlog) and it's okay, sure. But then I got to The End. Holy ****, I'm starting to hate this game. I still haven't beaten him. Horrible boss fight, probably the worst ever I'm dead serious.
I get someone hating the End to be honest. It can get a little frustrating the first time through. Provided you have Thermal goggles you should be alright if you find him once. Those footprints.
But yeah, everything after The End, escort mission aside, is quality.
MGS2 had the best gameplay of the series. The tanker portion is not only one of the top 2ish hours of the series, but some of the best 2 hours in all of gaming. MGS1 had the best moral and theme to the game with the "your genes dont always determine your fate in life".
MGS3's theme is probably tied with MGS2 for the 2nd best theme (MGS2's theme being your memes dont always determine your fate in life, MGS3's being the era you grow up in has a direct response to your personality)
As for gameplay wise, its probably 2 > 4 > 1 > 3. 2's gameplay just sets the bar Story wise, its debatable all the way around, but the only thing id definitely say is 1> the rest. Id probably go something like 1 > 2 >>> 3 > 4 for the story, but id listen to an argument for 2, 3, or 4 in any order as long as 1> the rest.
Characters-wise, id tempted to go 1 > 3 > 4 > 2. MGS2 was kinda meh on characters due to raiden's portion (which is probably about 80% of the game). Dead Cell was also inferior to foxhound and the cobra unit. MGS4's beauty and the best unit was pretty boring, but all the other characters in mgs4 made up for it.
So ya, overall with the MGS series its like "pick whatever excellence", but id still say 1 > 2 > small but noticeable gap > 3 > 4.

But this doesn't really resemble my true feelings, because I would rate all of them a 10. I just know I like 3 the most, the others flip around. They're all fantastic and the best games ever, but MGS3 just has everything and is pretty much perfect.

From: rammtay | #032 i just shoot him in the wheelchair every time.
And deny yourself the fun of one of the best boss fights ever?
Seriously, I didn't have the thermal goggles my first time playing either, and it took me like 45 minutes to defeat him, but it was so worth it. Such a great fight. There's so many ways to defeat him and so many things you can do in that fight, it's legendary.

The box says "Online Gameplay not rated by ESRB", I should be able to trade my phallic named Wobbufetts to a bunch of 8 year olds. - MarvelousGerbil
I'll play it eventually. But that guy man... the last thing I recall was I was scouting the area with the sniper (completely pissed at that point). Just looking around at the hotspots on the map. Then all of a sudden the bastard shows up right behind me and puts me out. Mother****er. Back to prison, and PS2 turned off. >:(

Yeah that happens. I'd advise you to get back there and, if you can't beat him, just save and leave it for like three days. Sometimes these things just need to be done bit-by-bit.
From: metaIslugg | #043 Really? I just read he dies of old age... I haven't played in weeks, maybe a month. Does this mean.... I beat him without doing anything? Wat.
Yep, if you saved during the fight and it's been more than a week since you've played, the PS2's internal clock will recognize it and act like it all happened in real time, and The End will have died of old age.
You can cheat a bit by saving and then manually moving your PS2's internal clock a week ahead, too, if you like.
I was trying to mess with you. More than like 2 days but less than a week he captures you and you end up in prison again. More than a week and he dies. You can just set the clock.
