I want a new DS game. I have no idea what Layton is about except that it's got puzzles. I heard about 999 too and that sounded cool though.

Layton is quite possibly the greatest series created in the last 10 years.
999's pretty cool.

Layton is heavy on puzzles, light on story.
999 is light on puzzles, heavy on story.

All depends on what you like.

Do you like visual novels? 999 has some puzzles, but its pretty much entirely a story.

Layton is literally nothing but 100+ puzzles, with an absurd story tacked on.

Basically, if you prefer story, go 999. If you want a ton of puzzles to occupy your time, go Layton.

What are the puzzles in Layton like? Just some block thingies or stuff like figuring out what to do based on character text or something?

And I am absolutely fine with visual novel type games.

The Layton series basically has every kind of puzzle ever. Mazes, logic puzzles, lateral thinking puzzles, math puzzles, etc.

Have you ever had one of those puzzle books that were filled with all sorts of different puzzles? It's like that, only a game. With a mystery storyline. And awesome cutscenes.

Hmm I'm not too crazy about those since I was so bad at them/gave up after five seconds.,,

But Layton has that crossover with Phoenix coming up and I don't want to miss out on something potentially awesome. Am I going to have to play the whole series? There's like five of them isn't there?

Not really. Layton plot is so absurd that it isn't really something you need to play to get. A wikipedia summary would probably have the same effect as actually playing the game.

Yeah, here's how the basic Layton game works.

Talk to someone.
"Hey, can you help me with this puzzle?"
"A little boy says 'I have one brother that's four years older than me and one that's five years older!' The next day, a boy of the same family says 'I have two brothers, one of which is two years younger than me, and another who is six years younger.' What's the minimum number of brothers in this family?"
"Wow, thanks Professor, that was keeping me up at night."
Walk somewhere else.
Talk to some other guy.
"Huh? Yeah, I can advance the plot for you. But first, solve this puzzle!"
"Assume a family uses exactly one bundle of wood in the fireplace each day, regardless of how cold it is outside. For the three-month period starting this month, the family will use three more bundles of wood than the three-month period right after. What month is it right now?"
"Oh wow, Layton, you're good. Yeah, let me get that plot advancement for ya!"
Go somewhere else.
Talk to another guy.
"Yeah, I know where you need to go next, but if I help you, you're gonna have to help me solve this puzzle!"

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Layton plots are absurd, but they're charmingly absurd.
Obviously I play for the puzzles, but I do greatly enjoy the story with each new game.

In other words, you could basically just watch all the cutscenes on Youtube, and you would essentially bypass a good 90% of the game that really doesn't have anything to do with the actual story.

Well, if you ever get stuck, you do have hint coins to help you out. I thought I would be bad at those type of puzzles at first, but I quickly found the game to be really fun and don't consider them to be too difficult, aside from some select puzzles, and that's mostly the optional ones.

There are currently five games in the series. The fourth one was just released in the US. The stories are mostly independent of one another, so you don't need to play them all to understand them, but there are numerous cameos and references to previous games, so it's definitely worth playing them all to enjoy the little stuff like that. Not to mention they're all great games anyway.

Just FYI, though, the first game does a great job of tying the puzzles into the story at the end.

*minor hint toward major spoilers for Curious Village*

Basically, they have an ingenious way of explaining why everyone is asking you seemingly unimportant questions throughout the whole game.

*END HINT*

Honestly I'll probably end up getting both but I can't get them at the same time and I don't know what else would come in between that to make me put off getting the other one.

If you don't like logic puzzles, don't play Layton. If you're a perfectionist, don't play Layton.

You'll end up resetting your game a bunch of time so you can get max picarats/max hint coins. It'll be really boring but you'll end up completing it because the story is pretty nice.

Uh, I'm a perfectionist, and I've never reset a Layton game once. Unless you've got major OCD, there's no big loss if you lose some Picarats here or there.

I'd put 999 over the Layton games.

Pretty way over, actually.

That's not to say Layton isn't good though.

Layton's story may be poor.

But we can all agree, Layton himself is amazing.

I definitely enjoyed Layton less than I would have because I had to use a guide to make sure I got every goddamn hint coin (I wish they would at least have something that tells you how many are hidden in an area; without using a guide, there is no way to know if you're done)
