Too vague

Some genres are being refined while others are being left behind. Playstyle is something as varied as types of games catering to them. About all I can say for sure is that the games on the whole are changing, as there are different markets they are trying to reach and have new technological ways to interact than they did before.

C, anyway. Technically better and more diverse (yes, more diverse. hello Indie scene) in almost every way.

I love old games, don't get me wrong, but gaming is improving. I don't like the reliance on sequels and huge franchises, it seems to be a bit of a stifle on creativity, but eh. The sequels are still great and often better than the originals, especially this gen.

D, because according to the gospel of Guiga and MWC, there are now games being released that aren't actually games.

And they don't mean the typical "lol too many cutscenes = movie" argument.

An RPG simply being made by Japan isn't what I'm talking about. I mean the anime esque turn based RPGs we were getting for so long, that have really dried up in recent years.

I can understand people still liking Pokemon games and all, but are there really people who think those games, which are largely the exact same thing everytime, are really saving that whole genre? It is right up there with all the rest of the genre in terms of being stagnant, it just happens to have a gameplay concept that is still relatively novel.

anyway, C, easily.. storytelling alone has come a long way in games, I think over time we have really learned what works and what doesn't also. And, the huge budgets for games these days means if you release a bad game, odds are, you are going to lose a lot more money than you ever would have before, which I think puts more pressure on these guys to deliver.

C

Obviously all genres have their ups and downs but the general trend is certainly in this direction. Only thing the previous generation (singular) has is that it feels like we got a higher percentage of games out of Japan then, though I could be wrong. Probably due to the fact that the PS2 was the clear dominant console in all regions, while this gen it's fragmented. Plus Nintendo being morons about e.g. Xenoblade, Fire Emblem 12, Ace Attorney 2, etc.

Key question here. Games are getting better on average, but the peaks are much lower. Does anything from this generation compare to, say, the peaks of the SNES/Genesis? No.

I'll go ahead and go D

to be fair, the other side of the coin says that big budgets force developers to not take huge risks, and only release things that they are much more certain will sell to a more common denominator.

Its tough to say really about gaming. Large companies have been getting very stale the past few years. Almost the entire gen tbh. Smaller companies, while less common these days (fun but primitive indie games aside), still deliver in droves though.

People say that, but most of this board's favorite games do not have huge risks.

if you want games that "take risks" though, they are actually around more than ever, go on XBLA or Steam's indie section

I'm not so sure about that. This board eats up games like EarthBound and TWEWY; I'd say it's more of a mix.

Gameplay wise, Earthbound takes some of the least risks ever, it's weird, but it's not anything I would describe as "original".

same with any SNES RPG or PS1 RPG this board loves, I don't see any key risks there.

but looking at some of my top games of the year, retail wise, 2 great games that "took risks"

Portal 2, LA Noire, I'd probably say Deus Ex as well. and those are just retail games, a lot more in the downloadable market.

maybe they dont seem like big risks now, but most of the "most popular" games of all time (not sure about this board's....im a new poster to this board) were a risk or a big change in some way, shape or form.

And the "you should play more indie games then" response is kind of saying "anything new in gaming should be relegated to an indie title or section like xbla or a section of steam". I think its dangerous to label things that way. Indie games tend to be pretty damn primitive too....

With that said, some PC titles are getting stronger again. Heroes 6 is the best installment since heroes 3/wog imo...of course thats only one example.

Im not sure how portal 2 took a risk, but LA Noire was pretty innovative.

I think you might just be anti-jrpg icehawk. You prefer western oriented titles. Thus a game like earthbound wont seem risky to you. Id say the story of earthbound was maybe not "risky", but pretty different.

I have always been a fan of JRPGs, hence my disappointment at how poor a lot of them have been this gen.

portal 2 is a full retail release of a pure puzzle game with a short single player, and a short co-op campaign. I'd say thats a risk.

The games I'm playing are getting better... C.

It's hard to say because it's so incredibly easy to tell what games are going to be good, and what games are going to be bad these days. When you were 8 and you bought a game you had no idea if you were getting an all-time classic like Street Fighter 2, or complete garbage like Pit Fighter.

I haven't bought a game I've disliked since Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, whenever the hell that came out. Most PS1, N64, SNES, Genesis and old PC games were crap. We just tend to remember the best ones. Most games now are crap too, but you won't see anyone talking about Bodycount 5 years from now, they'll be remembering how great the first Modern Warfare was.

theres a few good DS RPGs, but most of them bore me, pokemon (nowadays) and golden sun especially. having Radiant Historia, TWEWY and DQ9 doesn't suddenly mean the whole genre is alive and kicking and better than ever.

While most jRPGs were getting more and more intricate, EarthBound reduced its gameplay to the bare essentials, rivaling the original Dragon Quest in simplicity. And I wasn't just talking about gameplay originality; the entire aesthetic of EarthBound was a huge gamble and departure from the norm.

eh, there is more than that for good DS RPGs. Try infinite space first off. The Dark Spire too is really old school. And if you like fanservice-esque jrpgs Super Robot Taisen Endless Frontier was pretty good, despite the series as a whole being pretty "meh". This all off the top of my head.

I do think its a cause for concern that the DS and PSP are the only two systems that have significant amounts of jrpgs though. Unless the future of gaming is handhelds and home consoles are on the way out...which is very arguable.

Of course depending on the size of the scope of the question. The past 15 years (1996-2011) has produced better games to me than the 15 years before that (1981-1995) for me.

And I love voice acting, cinematic impressive games, etc. So on the whole, I do think gaming is getting better.

But of course, it's not getting better in every way, the DLC stuff, entering a bunch of codes in when I get a new game, some games being very short and linear, etc.
