Sadly, some of the oft railed against features are back as well, the blue shell in particular. This time, it travels along the ground like in the N64 version, blowing away everything in its path in pursuit of the lead driver. In its final approach, it flies up as in the more recent Kart games, dropping down in an explosion. This incarnation is especially evil. In one of my races, I was hit from behind while in third place. The first two drivers then crossed the finish line while the shell was in its airborne stage. The shell then reversed course in mid-air and came back to hit me again.

also The problem with Blue Shells was never that they were OP, they're supposed to be. The 2 problems was they nerfed it so that only 1st place gets fubar'd over, and they came out like Pez

Yes, there is another item behind Peach too, but I don't know what it is. Supposedly it's really rare, and it should be, considering how broken it seems to be. You can pretty much be invincible the whole race, it it's your first item. >_>

These posts are dead-on. I mean, the series is self-parody now - the vast majority of MK players have been complaining about the unbalanced items for years, and Nintendo just keeps making things more and more over-the-top in spite of that.

What they should do is make an item switch screen, like in Smash Bros. If people want bat-**** insane races, they can leave all the items on; if they want races that are balanced, they can turn off the overpowered ones, like Lucky 7 and Blue Shell. Everybody wins.

Well, Mario Kart was never a game that should be meant to play competitively(unless you do time trials like I do...because the only item you have there are 3 mushrooms that you have to use wisely), it is a party game. People just try to make it competitive, because that's what people do.

Nothing wrong with that, but people will always run into major complaints when you try to turn it into something it isn't.
With that being said, I'll still rage when I'm doing multiplayer, because I want to win dammit.

Mario Kart is a party game, you're right; but nonetheless, items like Blue Shells make it way too over-the-top, IMO. I don't think they should be removed from the game, because they can make for some funny situations every now and then - but I definitely think the player should have the option to turn them off prior to a race.

That's what I love about Smash Bros. If I'm playing with people who aren't experienced at the game, having items like Smash Balls and Golden Hammers on makes for hilarious matches, and it evens the playing field. But when I play with people who are skilled at the game, it's much more fun to only have some basic items on, or none at all. Just because Smash is a party game doesn't mean (relatively) fair and balanced gameplay is unwelcome.

1) Blue Shells were ground-borne in MK64? I don't remember that.
2) Well at the very least, this hopefully presents this all-too common scenario: You are in first place. A guy way way way behind you throws a blue shell. It hits you. Racers two through four pass you and you are suddenly in fourth. The guy who threw the blue shell is no better off than he was before.
3) Jesus Christ how does that 7 Item even work? That's taking it too far. I mean the Squid Item has always been worthless, so it's more like a 6 Item, but for all I know that's a Blue Shell behind her. Or a Giant Mushroom. Or a Bullet Bill.

I never said anything about balance, I'm saying most people who complain about the balance of games are people who are trying to make it competitive, when they shouldn't be.

If you want to talk about balance, I'd make the argument that it is pretty balanced(item wise) to begin with. Aside from earlier games such as Mario Kart 64, where you could literally get a lightning bolt in 1st place.
Flying Blue shells in the Wii version you could dodge, not only from having a star, or a mushroom of some sort, but you could also destroy it if you were in the air and threw your held item back, you could dodge them by trick boosts, among other things. Lightning bolts by inexperienced players were easy to predict(they would be used right away) and ones by experienced players were easy to predict(often used on first place going over a gap or a group of players going over a gap). All the other items were pretty irrelevant, and the only that was absolutely terrible was the Thundercloud, which isn't in this game.

Really it just came down on how smart you were with your items, were you going to use you power items to boost and get shortcuts? Or were you going to save them for impending doom such as lightning or a blue shell.

But, if you want items off, there will probably be strong chance of customizable rules in hosted matches. I only say this because Nintendo mentioned something about communities in online rooms. That could mean like something related to clans, and how they want to play, custom rules, ect, ect.

Why are people acting like the Blue Shell is somehow worse. This is an improvement, since it being on the ground actually, you know, helps the person in last.

As for the 7 item... I don't see a problem with it if they pull the percentage of Blue Shells down and make that the comeback item.

EDIT: And yeah, Blue Shells were definitely ground-based in 64.

Also, the reason why MKW was terrible as hell with item annoyances wasn't because the items existed. It was because of the 12-player system making those items happen all the time. Argh I don't know how many times I've been hit with a huuuge chain of items hitting me one after another. (Blue Shell + Red Shell + Lightning very common)

I liked this because it gave whoever was in first place some sort of defense. If second place is right on your tail and a blue shell is coming, just try and get in their path before it hits.

^Only one I would honestly worry about is a person with a star, you can dodge bullet bills, use your star for the Blue shell to dodge it, or use the star to dodge a lightning. Just depends on which lightning(as in 64/Wii) they use, the one where the sky gets dark then strikes, or the Wii where it's instant.
The Wii version isn't that bad, there is 30 second window before it can spawn again in an item box, so you just have to gamble on when the person will use it.

This also depends if you can freely sort through what item you want to use, without wasting one in order to get to the item you want to use.

haven't really liked the series since Mario Kart 64, doesn't sound like this will be different. MK64 and CTR are probably still the best two kart racing games, and it's been forever since those came out.

Mario Party went through a similar transformation. Mario Party 2 and 3 are the perfect balance of skill versus random fun for everyone and ease of entry. The further you go in the series, the more luck-based and boring it becomes.
