initially, Dark Souls was gonna be with a tin case, sleeve, strategy guide, art book, soundtrack, and a behind the scenes dvd all in 1 package.
initially, if you pre-ordered you'd get bumped up to it free.
then the guide became a mini guide of what we now know is basically future press's full guide. said mini guide became digital. the CD became digital. the soundtrack became digital.
so now it's just a tin case + sleeve + art book.
and it turns out it's actually pretty limited and they're only doing a couple retailers, and not everyone who did pre-order is gonna get it. orders will be canceled of course - and newegg especially manned up and gave $20 to everyone who did - but that's a pretty impressive collapse on their end.

free swag is always important. though when said free swag ends up going from 'yeah sure you all totally get all this!' to 'well... except all that's not really the same anymore...' to '..yeaaahh..... about that... you probably don't get it at all' it's pretty entertaining.
but hey, $20.

To be fair, their website did list only 4 retailers about pre orders on this(Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop and Wal-mart). So unless something changed recently that I don't know about, Newegg and other retailers that were not listed shouldn't have been doing the CE upgrade.
except by their own words they said all pre-orders would get the upgrade. they didn't say 'from these select guys!' newegg, target, k-mart, etc all pretty much got the shaft there. when Atlus does pre-order bonuses through amazone or gamestop, they make it pretty explicit that it's only a bonus through 'em. these guys didn't.

Is there anything implying that you are not getting a digital version to go with your physical one? Special editions do that all the time. pretty much everywhere.
though uh, there's one weird exception. europe apparently is actually getting some physical goodies. i think the differences go they get a weaker case, but the making of DVD as a physical copy. possibly the CD as well. guide's digital for both though.

....dude, it's literally been that way for months. it's been a slow, progressive burn as they X'd out piece by piece and made a weird split with Europe. i mean by all means, if you reallly wanted this Day 1 in the first place, the art book and tin case might be nice swag (depends on the art book, if they skimp on that add another one)! but the rest... weell....

Well I didn't preorder it because I wasn't very interested in the game so I wasn't unaware.
That seems to be the thing now. I preorder Assassin's Creed Revelations because of the free upgrade to the special edition which is friggin' awesome. Dragon Age II had the same thing, I believe.

pfft, i ain't complaining as i got $20 out of it. better deal considering what they X'd out. however if all of it were still what it originally was stated as, i don't think i could say that.
though people absolutely have a right to complain about it as it's a matter of value. if you would not have pre-ordered it were it not for what was originally stated, then you can complain. thankfully nobody's getting charged for the places that are getting only the regular edition, but if you're like ltm here and didn't know that they gimped most of what was stated, and would've been fine with waiting it out for a sale?
yeah. you'd have every right to complain about that.

If this stuff is digital then it's fine, I was never going to use any of the things being listed as digital here in the first place. It's just not a sure thing yet.
Even with no bells and whistles, Dark Souls is pretty much guaranteed to be the greatest game ever made regardless.

well sure, if you're a person who were going to pre-order it regardless then of course it's nice if you got the bonuses. if you didn't, well it's fair to be pissed since you got the short end of the stick. but pre-order bonuses exist to get people to frontload their money when the game is at its most expensive. if you're one who'd do it regardless, it matters less to you. if you're not, then no, it isn't 'free.' it's the value which you would've waited on.

Eh, I mostly use Gamefly nowadays. If I'm not buying a game the day it comes out, I'm not buying it at all. Sonic Generations and Dark Souls are the only 2 games currently announced that I plan on picking up.
I can't imagine caring even the slightest little bit about a physical copy of the CD/Soundtrack. All that would've hapless is they would've went in my laptop and then gotten scratched and forgotten in some lOnely corner of the house. The guide is a bit disappointing, but not that big of a deal.

psh, that's where you're wrong numbers! there are 2 perks to it:
1) the physical item itself holds far more value. and i don't mean this just on a personal level, but money. a good collection can at least you get some nice change out of it.
2) the quality of the tracks. you are most likely not downloading lossless material. with the physical CD you can make perfect copies exactly as they ought to be, with nothing lost.
of course, if they offer it in a lossless format, 2 can go away. 1 won't however.

the digital soundtrack ain't hard to find, no. which also kills the value really in that you can find it everywhere and will find it everywhere, so it's not really a 'bonus.'

...man, how'd you find out about the book depositry sale outside of CAG? and yes, cheap ass gamer. i mean yes you still were wrong with the better sale at the time - there was a 10% off - but it didn't really matter after a certain point. i expected a follow up topic from you too when they kept lowering the prices! $17 and change for the CE guide, delicious.
