Phillies fans who go to the games are mostly from the suburbs though, which are actually pretty ritzy. And Charlie Manuel is as much at fault for this as anyone. Seriously used Ben Francisco as a pinch hitter in the seventh instead of John Mayberry when he needed someone to just get on base, not to mention he started Raul Ibanez again for no reason other than loyalty. Raul Ibanez, the guy who is so awful in left field that they sent the runner every time a ball was hit that way and only got caught once (which was a shock in itself). He also used Brad Lidge that year. A lot. Whether or not that contributed to losing the WS, it was stupid to do.

i think for every single time any fan, be they mets, phillies, whomever says the yanks buy a WS...
look at the phillies this year. It's so 100% evident they're gonna win it. And ti was bought really. The dump of nearly their whole farm for halladay. their splurge on lee. another send off for oswalt. Hamels is the only home grown talent that's gonna win the post season for them, the other guys aren't factors yet. So yeah, baseball is changing fast. I think history shows that you can't really buy the WS, though it helps. The 1996-2000 Yankees teams were more homegrown than bought, and the salary only reached ridiculous levels when they stopped winning the WS past 2001. And the Yankees have 1 WS to show for almost a decade of 200M+ salaries since then. You can buy your way into the playoffs, but the marginal return on each dollar spent past that becomes very thin. -- 90s games > 00s games ... Copied to Clipboard!

"home grown" isn't the noble enterprise it's sometimes made out to be. The rich teams get more picks (compensatory), and can afford to pay for guys, and can pay for international free agents. Mid-market teams that want to compete push for reform, but most teams prefer to have the top ~8 teams continue to reload because of revenue sharing.

What's annoying about MLB the Show 11 is that Manny is a top level free agent, meaning he resigns with a team.
