Seriously, "Greatest Game Rivalry" was a really ill-advised concept to begin with... and now he's shooting down every single interesting rivalry. Barkley/Jordan isn't eligible. Einstein/Hitler doesn't appear to be eligible. Freaking MARIO/SONIC isn't eligible. At this point, I'm hoping the contest goes the way of the Quotes Contest - and from the looks of it, I don't appear to be alone. Not by a long shot.
Give me the Female Villains Bracket over this bull-ish any day.

There's no doubt in my mind that this contest will be worse than anything GameSpot's done.
But I never hated GS's contests, so take that with a grain of salt!
I understand why Mario/Sonic isn't allowed. That is mainly just fan made and has more to do with Nintendo vs Sega from the 90s. Allen seems to want it more based on the characters having a rivalry in the game they appear in.

Anyone who doesn't think Mario/Sonic should be a legitimate entry has forgotten how huge of an impact that rivalry had. That was the console war - it literally changed the face of gaming forever.

Not denying it was the biggest rivalry gaming has ever seen, but it has everything to do with the characters being mascots for their respective companies and nothing to do with how they interact in any game the two are in together.

I don't really see why that should matter. Even if it's not a rivalry in any of their mainline games, it's still a rivalry that's left an unprecedented impact on the gaming world - Bacon really needs to think outside the box and include stuff like this.
The funniest part is SBAllen could have just said at the end "Well, Mario/Bowser got more nominations, and since the rules say only one bracket entry per character, Sonic/Mario couldn't get in". Even if he'd actually lied, no-one would've doubted him.

It's obviously Mario and Sonic competing.
Even if Yoblazer's joking, all I see is Mario and Sonic running a race - no different than Yoshi and Tails playing table tennis or Luigi and Shadow running hurdles. Still, I haven't played the games, so maybe Sonic and Mario constantly go head-to-head, have special sequences when they are matched up, or serve as "end-bosses" for each other's story modes. However, I think if you let them in, you have more people voting for the Nintendo vs. Sega rivalry the pair represents rather than the "rivalry" exhibited in the crossovers.

I don't agree with Link's utter domination of GFaqs contests, but I'm not against it either. If the opinion of the voters is that Link and his games are better than their competition, fine. The chance that his popularity stems from beyond the games he is in is nominal. I'd have a problem if a comic book hero like Batman won a contest, as it would be difficult to discern if people were voting based on the character from his games or other media.

People are voting for the Zelda games, not Link the character, since he... Has none. Thus, they aren't voting as intended.
Which means people voting for Mario/Sonic because of the system rivalry instead of the Olympic games would be nothing new or extraordinary.

The female bracket was filled to the brim with fodder and the overall result was a given, but at least there were a few matches up in the air. Every rivalry that has the potential to seriously upset has been shot down without a single thought by someone that doesn't know what makes contests exciting (hint: it's not accurately predicting the results of a match where virtually no one cares about the results).
He has, in short, made the whole contest the females bracket when the rules very explicitly say it should be something very different. I do believe that someone else mentioned the quote contest before, and I must say that at least when that was cancelled the reason was because the nominations in no way reflected the expected outcome. We weren't told "All your base are belong to us" wasn't a valid entry because the engrish made it a terrible entry, we were told "too many people expect AYB to be an automatic entry and aren't nominating it, so we can't even get an accurate view of what might win." Bacon's doing the former, not the latter.
Seriously, what it comes down to is this: Bacon is rejecting nominations his own rules say are valid because they might actually surprise people. Surprise value is the one thing the contests have been lacking. He's not saying they create flaws in the bracket that highly skew the seeding process, like the way everyone tried to game the system with the quote contest, he's saying that potential surprises aren't welcome. And this is the guy that let L-block in. F'in ridiculous.

That's not a bad theory, but who's to say people aren't voting for the games because they have Link in them? Are you saying that OoT is the undisputed best game of all time despite Link? Was Majora's Mask truly the best game in the last contest?

And would in fact be the standard, as no CB champion has won based on their character. The most vibrant of the Noble Nine was two dimensional at best (Snake or Cloud, no one else in the group even hits this low of a level of personality), while the rest were one dimensional or blank slates with no dialogue (or even expression) whatsoever. Hell, someone tried to give one of them a personality and the backlash was pretty big as far as gaming goes. And let's not forget, a BLOCK one the character contest once.
Nope. No one votes how they are supposed to at all. That doesn't mean nominations should be thrown out because human nature contradicts the way one single, solitary soul believes every one else should act.

On the subject of Earthworm Jim, 4chan rallied for it against Link in GameSpot's 2009 contest. Link ended up finishing at 64.60% on Earthworm Jim in round 1, but it would have been over 70% without the rallying.
