I don't recall the "plot" of Mario Land 2, but I'm pretty sure Mario had to rescue someone he kidnapped or something.

But mario 2 doesn't count--Wario was introduced as a villain, but only ever wanted money, and he realized that there was much better money in business than in stealing princesses.
