It's a great nom, but keep in mind it has to beat out both Mario/Bowser and Sonic/Shadow /Eggman to make the cut.

I think he should allow a max of two rivalries per character tbh. Sonic/Shadow/Knuckles are great, but Sonic/Mario is one of gaming's definitive rivalries.

The rules state all they need to appear in the same series or game... and Mario/Sonic are in the Olympic games and Brawl. Don't see why it wouldn't count.

Sonic/Mario would probably be a popular nomination without the guru support. I'd be genuinely surprised if it didn't get in with it. Don't be so pessimistic, especially considering how much Mario/Sonic getting in would improve the contest!

I have a feel that Mario/Bowser would have no trouble getting over 1000 nominations at the minimum. With that many nominations for Mario/Bowser, a board rally for Mario/Sonic wouldn't even come close to beating out Mario/Bowser. Casual users are very unlikely to nominate Mario/Sonic over Mario/Bowser.

X/Zero, you say? That's such a great choice that I've already nommed it!

However, I'm really interested by the Sonic/Mario proposal. It's got no chance of beating out Mario/Bowser without Guru support. But WITH Guru support, it could not only make it into the bracket, it could actually win the whole Contest!

Problem is, we're not sure if SB is going to allow that as an official pairing. People have sent in tickets on the subject though; we should have an answer by Monday.

EDIT - Aww shucks, looks like BT already confirmed X/Zero in an official topic. That's fine- let's just rally the heck out of Mario/Sonic starting Monday regardless!

Hmmm, I don't think it would be impossible. Let's look at the numbers from last year's Character Battle as an example.

Link was the #1 overall choice, picked by 1,853 people. Obviously B8 isn't going to come close to putting up 2k noms, buuuuuuuuut

* Over 90,000 total noms were sent in back then. Now we've got less site traffic, a much less popular Contest idea, a form that takes more effort to fill out, a shorter nomination period (probably), no banner on the front page to direct casuals to the form (probably). Only 7,000 noms have been made so far, and I'd say we'd be lucky to reach 20,000. So proportionally, we're now down to 412 for Mario v Bowser.

* Link's always more popular than Mario to the tune of 63/37 or so. If that's true for noms as well, we're down to 152.

* Apparently some people think Mario v Wario is a good idea? I don't get it either, but there were enough noms for SB to add that option to the list, so it must be true! If 20 of those Mario fans would rather see him face Wario than Bowser, now we're split down to 132.

Even without BT's help this should be easily doable!

Of course I do, but the point I'm trying to make is that there really aren't THAT many nominations for any specific entrant. Jak got into the last Contest (and skipped the play-ins) with only 196 noms, meaning it probably didn't take much more than 100 to get into those play-in polls.

True, we'll probably only have 64 entrants this time instead of 128. But again, we're comparing 90k nominations versus 7k- a little push is going to go a long way.

(in 2008, without Guru help, he was a 12 seed out of 16)

2008 - Altair was a 2 seed out of 16
(in 2010, without Guru help, he... stayed a 2/16)

2009 - Yoshi's Island was a 10 seed out of 16, but that was in the super competitive 1995-1997 bracket

2010 - Prinny was a 13 seed out of 16

2010 - No Mercy was a 6 seed out of 16

We had 70 "confirmed" noms for No Mercy, as in 70 of the 120 people people who posted their full list in the tally topic included that game. In total though I'm sure we were well over 150.

Nominations are much lower this year compared to last year. There were about 90000 for the last character battle and I found this post after the GOTD nominations closed:

As of right now, we are only at 8717 nominations and I don't think we'll manage to break 20000 nominations this time.
