I basically use people all the time, but I;m just wondering when it's correct to say "peoples".

Peoples isn't improper grammar. It's more used to refer to specific groups of people rather than just a generic gathering of people.
Like, you could refer to "The peoples of South Africa" and be talking about the various ethnic groups represented there. I mean, there's no specific instance I can think of where it's grammatically necessary to use it, but whatever. You CAN use it. -- "Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Peoples isn't a proper word. It was originally a funny way to feign ignorance to how plural words work, and it just sort of caught on I guess.

From: LeonhartFour | #006 Ahh. This is exactly what I was thinking. I can never remember the hard and fast rules of grammar (even as a Linguistics major) but I was writing a response and it seemed natural to write "the peoples of ancient Greece", and then I stopped and had to think about it for a while because I never really use that word. Danke. Oh, and I wasn't asking about the validity, I know for a fact it's a term used even in academic writing. -- http://soundcloud.com/thundersheep/lunatic-asylum http://soundcloud.com/thundersheep/summer-rain ... From: Wanglicious | #012 Why are you so surprised? "People" and "Peoples" aren't the same word. Like paperwarior said, there's a difference between saying "two people" and "two peoples," because the latter would refer to specific ethnic groups and the former could apply to any two individuals regardless of relation. -- Support Seifer Almasy (Final Fantasy VIII) for Character Battle IX! http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9342/banner3seifer.jpg ... It is a real term, and I've seen it used enough to where I can distinguish between people and peoples without having ever looked up a definition <_<
It's like when you're talking about group and groups. Group refers to more than one, but it's treated as singular because you're talking about the entire unit, of which there's only one. And if there's more than one unit, it's groups. Same thing with people. It refers to multiple.. uh... persons, but since you're talking about the persons as one unit, it's singular. And if you're talking about multiple units, it's plural. -- "Duel audio? You mean like rap battles?" - termina_rzident KrahenProphet and Kana are on opposite ends of the Awesome Spectrum. ... Not too surprising. English teachers tend to disagree about a lot of things, like the serial comma.
The English language is pretty much shaped by how people use words, and when someone says 'peoples', they're either using incorrect English or are pointedly referring the different groups. Not like you have to accept it as good English, but eh, the important thing is that you understand what they're saying. -- "Duel audio? From: SpeedYoshi | #104 yeah it might sound incorrect, but I'm actually pretty confident that our use of people is from an evolution of how we came to use the language. The main problem is that no one really agrees on proper usage now and most of the time you just have to go the popular vote. -- Chrono1219 ... Copied to Clipboard!

From: thundersheep | #019 Although I don't understand how you're not convinced after Leon's post. It can't really be explained any clearer than that. Because I've heard multiple English teachers in high school and college say it's not a proper word, for whatever little that is worth. That's because English teachers are trying to cut to the chase and get people to stop writing "peoples" in place of "people," where it is indeed incorrect. Your teacher didn't bother to point out the exception where it is actually used. Then again, there are times where even English teachers get it wrong. For example, if you are sick to your stomach, the correct terminology is "I don't feel good," although everyone seems to think it's socially acceptable to correct people who say that and change it to well. If you say "I don't feel well," you are saying that your sense of touch is not working properly, as in "My hands are numb; I can't feel the keys well." ... Copied to Clipboard!
