Nintendo will probably force you to send it in and pay at least $80 to have it "fixed"

RevolverSaro posted... He's sent it to Nintendo twice already to get the screen fixed (something about lines appearing on the screen). Both times it was fixed for free.
It was after he got it back the second time that the R button stopped working
Tell him to stop being stupid with it.

The friend broke the R button because he was angry and hitting stuff with the 3DS because of Ridge Racer 3DS.
The things the friend has been hitting include his girlfriend, who is now pressing charges.
Nintendo won't fix it anymore because he wrote that on a note as the reason why he was sending it in again.
The R button being broken is actually key evidence in the trial against the friend for domestic abuse and is desperately seeking a discrete way to replace the button so as to discredit the note sent to Nintendo as being falsified evidence intended to frame the friend, so as to avoid being determined guilty and sentenced to jail time. Thusly, Saro is consulting B8.
