I could attach some context, but I'll wait until some video and images are up, but basically the basic rule: don't try to apologize and try to hug your opponent in the middle of a match. He will deck you.

Pianist posted... seems so, unsportsmanlike though it was. that proved nothing about mayweather's skills
Mayweather was dominating the fight, that's what makes this so hilarious. He could have won easily, could have played nice and accepted Ortiz's apology and continue boxing. But he said "Noooooooooooooope" and finished him right there.

mayweather was going to dominate that fight, but the only round he won really definitively was 3. i actually gave the 2nd to ortiz due to the aggression and might have given him the 4th as he was beginning to step it up before the headbutt
of course mayweather is a master of making adjustments and was going to be on his way. the problem is that we didn't get to see it and instead made it more into a freakshow...

He really didn't need to make many adjustments. He was landing more power punches at a greater percentage than Ortiz. Hell, that's why Ortiz decided to headbutt Mayweather, he was frustrated by all the shots he was taking, and how Mayweather was rolling off a lot of his biggest punches.

I like how Ortiz just kinda looked at the ref after the first hit like "uh...wtf" then got his ass knocked out. I'm sure this'll be giffed for message board purposes soon.
yeah joe cortez is the f***ing worst ref in boxing. the fact that not only does he continue to get these high-profile bouts but that he is in the hall of fame is evidence of how f***ing corrupt the sport is
re: the headbutt - yeah, ortiz was getting frustrated. but it didn't mean he was entirely ineffective. he was missing a lot against the ropes but he was also connecting - it was effective aggression. rounds like that brought oscar de la hoya nearly to a draw against mayweather. there would have been adjustments or it could have been really close.

Yeah, but good luck working Mayweather against the ropes for long enough periods of time to win the fight. When Ortiz did it the first time, all Mayweather did was put Ortiz on the defensive for the rest of the round.
Also, Ortiz looked pretty out-classed. Give him 3-4 years under the right people and he could beat Mayweather, but by then obviously Money ain't going to be in boxing anymore.

in round 3 ortiz definitely looked out of his league. mayweather took it to another level (making adjustments after R2, imo) by taking the fight to ortiz, walking forward (as he did against mosley) and not throwing just potshots but legitimate multi-punch combinations. it was phenomenal to watch. but in round 4, ortiz had mayweather moving backwards, and weirdly enough mayweather didn't look that comfortable. he landed a fair share of shots but it was definitely competitive.
agreed that ortiz would probably have lost the fight - but i wanted to see it

Larry is the typical crotchety old boxing fan, and its a large reason why people are turning to MMA. "Personalities? In my boxing? How DARE you!? Everyone should be bland and uninteresting like me!"
-- TheRock ~ Death By Misadventure, Not Suicide "Would've liked to see that." - Ayuyu on my boner
i actually disagree with that there... larry's a true fight fan and he's definitely got a personality. he doesn't mind that mayweather has a personality but he is too impatient and he's heavily biased against defensive fighters. he also tends to think that he's really smart and clever and original or whatever but he struggles with it way too much and it's embarrassing to listen to.
also, MMA's mike goldberg is by far the worst fight commentator

I like how barely anyone cared by the end that Ortiz committed one of the most blatant headbutts I've ever seen, but it's cool because Floyd did something completely legal later that they didn't like.
Imagine it the other way around.

From: TheRock1525 | #011 That's what I love about him. He finally said what I feel about Larry Merchant!
This exactly. One of my best friends (and the only one that cares about boxing) told me like 10 years ago that he wanted to fight Larry Merchant and I vowed to train him. He absolutely hated Mayweather before tonight and now he loves him, for exactly the same reason I have always loved him (and the exact reason why he has always hated him).
Pretty Boy needs to get in line behind the Fox Man.
Mayweather was afraid we could lose, so he seized this chance. Certainly unsportsmanlike, certainly cheap, certainly dirty, but effective and it won him the match.

What is unsportsmanlike about boxing in a boxing match? The ref said let's go and Ortiz went in for a second hug to apologize for his dirty ass headbutt. Ortiz got what he deserved.
The post fight interview was so great. Larry Merchant really knows how to get under a fighter's skin.
From: JaKyL25 | #021 I have to say though, it might not top MMA's most hilarious finish ever.
Oh my god this is even funnier.
"I didn't touch him. I didn't touch him! Illegal act. Illegal act! I didn't touch him; I stood there, he tried to kiss me on the lips like a homosexual! I'm not gay! I'm not gay."
Are these the two funniest endings to a professional fight ever? Because I can't imagine much that could be funnier.

All things considered, it was fair, protect yourself at all times and Ortiz was a moron.
ON 24/7 YOU HAVE THE FOOTAGE YOU SPENT HOURS ANALYZING THE FOOTAGE AND CALLING HIM DIRTY!
You got cocky because you got one good combo in, what a dumbass. You know the ref is bad, we've seen him be bad in previous mayweather fights too. But you still lose focus?
Yeah, the ref should have seperated both fighters to the corners then put in a clear "box", but man, way to look like a rookie Ortiz.
in the end i think everyone comes off badly from this - mayweather for the cheap shot, ortiz for dropping his guard, and the ref for being the worst f***ing ref ever
as far as funny fight endings go...
annoyed the hell out of me though

don't see what's so bad about this, the fight wasn't over or anything, ortiz was just being an idiot by trying to get friendly IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT. this was just to pad mayweather's win streak anyway since he's too afraid to fight pacquaio, completely expected outcome
ha. friend from the wrestling show said that ortiz must've won and that mayweather wasn't the favorite. sorta looked at him confused and left it at that.
that gif, glorious.

Well in most cases (at least in MMA, I don't follow boxing so not sure about that sport), if there's a foul and the offender feels bad about it, he'll initiate some sort of "my bad, I'm sorry" action like Ortiz did there (even while the clock is ticking), and the person who got fouled will play nice and accept their apology, touch gloves, and then they'll both get back in a fighting stance before returning to the fight.
What Mayweather did was by no means illegal or anything, it's just dirty pool. But he's the heel so whatever, he won by any means necessary!

Thank you, Eddie Guerrero. http://img.imgcake.com/Icon/Punkjpguh.jpg
I could see that in baseball or tennis or something, in more combat oriented sports I don't have as much of a problem with it. the basis of boxing is that two guys get in a ring and beat the **** out of each other, it's not exactly a sport for civilized people(yes I'd say it's worse than MMA in this regard, boxing gloves should be illegal and the entire sport is just striking with no grappling aspect, you just get in a ring and take shots to the head all night long)
true enough actually, you see people getting thrown at for really ridiculous things sometimes. can't explain it I guess, retribution is just human nature.
