Game systems often rely too much on remakes or ports and usually don't have very many original games in their launch lineup. This is why the game library will usually suck at launch.

There usually isn't a reason to buy a system at launch unless the price is right for you and the launch lineup consists of at least one game that you really care about.

first generation game systems are always a bad idea, it's almost universal at this point that they have a high defect rate, and few systems ever have a good game library at launch either. then again people should stop buying consoles to begin with, PC is so much better now it's ridiculous.

I think the Wii was the only console I did this for, my main reason was the launch date was right before christmas. Had I waited I would have missed out on the fun of having Wii Sports while the family were around at christmas and would have had to get TP on the cube instead.
As it turned out Nintendo didn't re-release the Wii, significantly reduce the price and I liked the Wii controls for that particular game just fine so it was a smart purchase.

On the contrary I didn't buy a PS3 at launch, I waited for the "better deal" in a year or so. My reward was a console without PS2 backwards compatibility. fffffffffffff

It's fun to get on latest technology when it comes out.

And personally I never understood the "better game library" thing.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't but every game available for a system. I start out with one or two, then slowly add to my collection.
Eventually every console (even the Wii) gets enough games worth playing to buy it for.

that's exactly why I hate getting consoles later and not at launch because at that point there's just too many games to get. Starting out with a few building up as they games come out is part of the fun.

Yup, the PS3 at launch was the all-to-overplayed "599 US Dollars".

And then I waited till the 250GB Slim was available, and payed $350 instead plus $21 for tax at rate of 6% in CT.

Tax rate on items is now 6.35%.

Well I rarely play video games that have been out for under six years. Last game I "beat" that fits that category is Civilization IV, and that's going to be six years old in a little over a month. That leaves Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M as the last two current-gen games I beat, and that was a little over a year ago. Ouch. And aside from paying MGS4 a visit, I don't see myself remedying this anytime in the near future.

In retrospect, the last console (or any game system) launch to contain ANY notable games that people still cite as being console-defining experiences is the Wii, and even then Wii Sports and Twilight Princess have plenty of loud anti-fans.

Going back further you find the GameCube and Xbox, but Melee was only a launch window game and Halo also has a lot of anti-fans. Then there's the N64 which had exactly TWO games at launch, but again both of the other console launches that generation seem to have stunk in regards to software libraries. Ooh, same seems to be true with the Genesis, while the SNES had Super Mario World and a good number of "tech demo" games like F-Zero, Pilotwings, Sim City, and Actraiser.

And man I can only imagine how it must've been to be a PlayStation or Saturn fan in 1996 who had prematurely turned their back on Nintendo. It's as if there was nothing particularly mindblowing on either of their systems, while BOOM - Nintendo fired a huge cannon shot in both Sega and Sony with the release of Super Mario 64 and it looked like Nintendo would rule the generation again. Oh my.

The only time I got a system at or near launch was when we had a discount through Activision to get Wiis (that were supposed to arrive before the launch date...and then they arrived several weeks later). But yes, I paid less than full launch price, which was the important part.
