Sonic 2>Sonic 4>S3&K>Sonic 3>=S&K>Sonic 1

I know some of you aren't gonna like that Sonic 4 placing, especially over S3&K >_>

I didn't grow up playing nor owning any sonic games back in the day, thus I obviously didn't have like 15 years playing them and as a result, I didn't think Sonic 4 was bad at all since I wasn't blinded by nostalgia goggles

I actually really enjoyed it

but still, Sonic 2 was just great all around

Sonic 1 - Having to keep 50 rings each act was annoying at times

Sonic 2 - 50 rings at checkpoints. The worst was when you accidentally went past a checkpoint and didn't have enough

Sonic 3 - Easy to find giant rings. Even without looking too hard you can have all 7 emeralds by act 1 of Marble Garden Zone

Sonic & Knuckles - Even EASIER giant rings to find. I almost always had all 7 by act 2 of Flying Battery Zone

Sonic 4 - See Sonic 1

Big rings the best

Although I'm not really sure what you mean by "more straightforward." Sonic 3 & Knuckles having a bunch of alternate paths to clear a level is one of the best things about it. And it's not like you can't just take a "straightforward" path in S3&K anyway.

Sonic 2 has plenty of alternate paths, too.

Keeping 50 rings at the end of the stage was easy since the game isn't too hard

50 rings at check points might pose a problem at times but theres more than one check point!

stopping and having to search for the big rings in Soinc 3 and the games afterwards killed the pacing and ruined the experience for me. I mean, they're still good but damn man.

they still do alot of things right, which is why Soinc 1 is last, that game seems archaic compared to the others

Considering how big the levels are, it involved a bit of searching

again, I have NO idea where they are since I never played these games.

Fun Fact: You don't have to get all the Emeralds to beat the game.

Double Fun Fact: Since you can save your game, you can just replay the first zone of S3 where there are a million easily accessible big rings and get all the Emeralds that way.

And I generally agree with "I don't want to look for stuff" when it comes to platformers, but there are two big exceptions:

Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Donkey Kong Country 2.
