- Watch this Street Fighter x Tekken trailer if you haven't yet. Damn it's awesome. Also, this isn't new but I wanted to point out how smooth Skullgirls looks. I'd play this over that Persona fighting game.

- TGS stuff happens tonight. Nintendo's at 11pm EST, Sony's at midnight. I'm sure there will be topics abound. Nintendo should be talking up that 3DS frankenstick and probably a new Pokemon game of some sort. Sony will probably be talking Vita release dates and some new games. I would guess they would be third party games + some new info on preexisting games. Maybe some ports.

- This weekend the NYT had an article talking about how video game companies get the biggest tax breaks in the US. They had some weird biased angle that was dumb but I thought the point was kind of interesting. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/11/technology/rich-tax-breaks-bolster-video-game-makers.html?pagewanted=all

- A Tales game came out in Japan last week which means it's time to announce the new one. If I had to guess, I'd say it's on Vita and is a spinoff. http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/12/theres-already-another-tales-game/

- THEATRHYTHM

- here's some NPD numbers about game sales. 2011 is on pace to be the worst year since 2006. Of course, this is all talking about physical retail which means it's full of crap. external image

Why put all kinds of money into a 1984-style police force when you can subjugate people by making them lazy gamers who are more docile? I've always wondered if the Department of Defense was really designing the Internet to make people anti-social and thus less likely to band together.

If people want to buy used, that's their prerogative. If a game company wants those same people to have to pay a fee in order to access their servers -- something that regular customers have already done -- there's no foul there. Totally fair.

With the rise of digital distribution, this is now false. Before, you buying used games 2 years after a game came out didn't really matter. Now, a game can be a New Copy forever.

claiming that the used market "cost" you a million sales is straight up intellectually dishonest. There's no way to prove that 1 million people:

1. Were going to buy new otherwise
2. Bought copy from second hand markets

He looked at two figures, subtracted them, and made up a bulls*** statement

There's absolutely nothing wrong with online passes, since they only bring it up to New cost, anyway, and not over. Hell, I bought NCAA Football '12 used for like, $43 after Gamestop discount. Paid $10 for online pass, and was STILL less than new. They got money, I still saved money. Win-win.

You have to directly compete with your own product that is sold for less. Uh, yeah, that costs you some money.

Would the game even have sold 2 million in the first place if people didn't know they could trade it in?

If I were him that's what I'd be more concerned about: why 50% of the people who did buy my game decided they didn't want it anymore.

Yes to the former.

I wouldn't be concerned about people trading in a 10 hour game when they can sell it. I would be concerned about tremendous word of mouth pumping money into Gamestop.

I have a question: what are the economics behind unopened new games being sold for like 50-75% off less than a year after release? I understand that these games are oftentimes bombs and that the seller is willing to take a hit just to clear inventory, but what about successful games? Example: I got Mass Effect 2 sealed and brand new for like $20 months after release. Portal 2 can be purchased for about half the launch price now, less than six months after launch. These are huge sellers.

Do publishers sell out subsequent shipments for lower and lower prices? What types of hits are sellers willing to take just to clear inventory? Is any profit being made on Bayonetta being sold for $12 brand new during a Black Friday sale? How much did Amazon pay for that game they're selling new for $12?

It's still strange to me. I consider gaming a pretty expensive hobby at $50-60 per game, but even if I want to support the industry by buying sealed copies, I just have to wait a few months or a year for huge discounts. That part of the gaming economic model is not something I see very commonly elsewhere... or at least I never notice it.

I have been wondering this for a long time. Mass Effect 2 is a smash hit that, less than 12 months later, was being sold for $10. is it really only worth 15% of its sale price so soon? I've always figured that others saw the money they made on games and had a reason for it, but I don't know. Nintendo seems to do it the right way - discount their games slowly instead of dropping the price by 50% in two months.

My guess is that the profits have already been made on those games, whether they sell remaining inventory or not.

My theory is that unlike Nintendo games, most games sell most of the copies they'll ever sell within the first month or two, and then it drops off significantly.

If they were still being sold at full price a year later, they probably wouldn't move any copies.
