I dont know about most of you, but the drive to find a girlfriend defined me in high school, something which would have been radically different had I been gay since options are EVEN MORE restricted for socially awkward gay kids in mainstream society.

No idea how I possibly missed this topic until now.

And actually, no, and I'm pretty sure my life wouldn't be much different, if at all. About the only thing that would've changed in my life would've been my own inner monologue. Instead of walking around and seeing girls and thinking to myself, "damn, she has a nice rack", I'd have walked around and saw guys and thought to myself, "damn, he has a nice ass." That and jerked off to completely different porn. Though I guess maybe I would've gotten a virus from all the gay porn I looked at and had to have cleared my hard drive, or bought a new laptop or something.

....... I've probably taken this a bit further than you had intended.

Pretty significant part of who I am? Not really. But it depends on what you think significant is I suppose. I've only had a handful of relationships so it isn't very defining for me personally. I can't imagine being radically different in personality or opinions though, and I'm assuming that's the whole point here. I just can't see any reasons thing would change, because my life isn't driven by my attractions.

Can you not put words in my mouth? There are things you can put in my mouth but words aren't one of them.

I don't consider homosexuality to be a very large part of my identity at all. I completely understand why you do, and I support it, but there are gays who take a different approach to this. I consider being gay to be more of a tertiary quality of who I am, and honestly the only reason I haven't really come out in real life is because I don't really want a big deal to be made out of it.

Would my life be any different if I was born straight? Not especially. I live in a gay-friendly environment, there's nobody who would persecute me if I was gay, and I understand that you're not in the same situation as I am, but everyone is in a different situation and in mine, my sexuality doesn't matter. It's about as important a part of my identity as what my favorite food is. In fact, it's less important, because I've never had sex but I have eaten a lot of food.

So when straight people say that their sexuality isn't an important part of their identity, I understand what they mean, because it's not that way for me either. I think it's for the better anyway, because I don't think gays will be treated as equal until we forget that it's even important at all.

I don't really mind that some gays do make a big deal out of being gay. Some people, straight or gay, are simply more driven by sexual desire than others - or, some gays feel the need to be forward about their sexuality as a defense mechanism, either to increase others' awareness about them, or simply because being bold about it is the only way they'll be accepted. That's fine, and I'm glad that there's been a big gay awareness movement over the last decade or so. The only thing I don't like is when these attitudes are projected onto all gay people, like every single person who is gay is really passionate about being gay. There are those of us who aren't really on a big crusade about it.

It's kind of like how I don't like the whole "all gays are just born that way" movement either. I don't really believe it. Now, what gay isn't is a choice - it's never a choice, like how your favorite food isn't a choice either. But I don't believe I wasn't born with an insatiable desire for chicken and I don't necessarily know that I was born with an insatiable desire for having sex with guys either. I could've grown up that way through external factors. Nobody really wants to have a nature vs. nurture argument for some reason. I think some people probably were born gay and some probably weren't. There's multiple ways to arrive at the conclusion that you're sexually attracted to people of the same gender.

Anyway I guess that's what's eating at me. This is all sort of an awkward subject for me, because other than the fact that I like dudes, I don't really fit into the usual gay stereotype that everyone expects and I feel completely distanced from any sort of "gay culture" that exists. It makes having conversations about it kind of weird.
