Should make for a good discussion. For my money, Pong still has addictive charm, as do most early Atari games. I'll cast my vote for Super Mario Land: its controls and compressed sprites make it pretty much unplayable.

Goldeneye is a big one I think of. Also really old rpgs like for NES. FF1-3 have all been remade, so the originals are near impossible to play anymore.
I still don't like the term "aged." It implies that the game has changed since it was released. It hasn't. Your expectations have.
Obviously, and everyone knows this is what the term means. "Aged" just flows better than "gaming's progressed and certain games look bad in hindsight, but I guess that's my fault!"
And I think Goldeneye's a good choice, yeah.

Any game in the PS1/N64 era. Early 3D aged so badly, there's really no comparison. Early 2D still looks mostly fine, in a charming way at least, but early 3D is just ugly.

Hmmm, I guess the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games a bit. Those games were completely mindblowing, some of my favorites ever (GTA3 and Vice City in particular), but I can't really get into replaying them these days. Especially the shooting mechanics and such.

Final Fantasy VII, though it was only ever "pretty good"

I don't agree with Super Mario Land. The game was bad to begin with, and I played it when it was new. It was clearly a cheap imitation of the good Mario games even when I was like six years old. So there was nothing there to age.
__Smurf__ posted... FF7 has aged very well. Goldeneye and MGS are good calls.
I think FF7s graphics have aged better than most PS1 games, since it was just simple and not trying to be all detailed like quite a few PS1 games ended up being. Like FF8 is a jaggy filled mess that might of been better graphics at the time, but now I prefer the simple look of FF7.
Yeah, FF7 will always look decent because of the lego aesthetic and the still-amazing backgrounds and music.
And personally I think MGS is still great too, because good voice acting doesn't age, and I prefer the simple controls to the convoluted mess in modern MGS games.
Mario 64 is still tops as well, as are the other top-tier N64 adventures, like Banjo-Kazooie and Zeldas.
90% of early 3D games do suck now though. And with some exceptions, 8-bit era games look and sound pretty bad.
In the end, I hope we can all agree on which generation aged best though: 16-bit. SNES and Genesis games will still look and play great in 200 years.

Simple controls? You mean archaic controls, right? Even MGS2 is leaps ahead of MGS1 in terms of controls.
Most PS1 and N64 games haven't aged too well mostly due to the fact that a lot of them were running at around 15-20 frames per second. We may not have noticed that in the past but it feels nigh on unplayable now due to how unresponsive and laggy everything feels. Goldeneye has already been pointed out but basically anything that would require fast reflexes and precise controls just don't play too well today. Thankfully there are emulators to allow one to bypass those frame rate problems :)

I played the s*** out of those games as a kid, but now I simply can't touch'em. I'd much rather play a Pokemon game from any other generation.

Another game popped into my head... Tekken 3. That was like the best 3D fighter of its time on PS1, but I tried it a few weeks ago and it just feels so dated now, and the fighting has like no depth compared to fighters these days
Sonic the Hedgehog Super Smash Bros. X-men: The Arcade Game (might just be that the coin-op to console transition made it underwhelming) Goldeneye Perfect Dark Metal Gear Solid Pokemon R/B/Y
I'm just thinking it may have been more fun in the arcade because you actually had motivation to try in it. When I'm playing it on Xbox, it's almost like it punishes you for staying alive because there's no punishment for using continues and you refill your mutant powers.

well most arcade games are boring if you give yourself unlimited continues. it's better to set a finite (and small) amount of continues allowed before you start the game and then stick to it. the next time you play, stick to that same limit and see if you get further. that's how arcade games are meant to be played.

Well, it would be more fun in an arcade when you're playing with 2-5 other people in person. But I'd rather take 3 of those people and play Ninja Turtles or Shadow over Mystara or something.

Maybe first-person controls, but MGS has a nice simplicity to the control scheme that the other games don't have. If you know how to work within its limits, there's nothing wrong with MGS1 today. Still a blast to play.
