-Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2 and Tails Adventure (Game Gear). Every bit as good as the series' best on the Genesis, IMO.

Boscopinion so ha-

I never liked Triple Trouble an awful lot, for whatever reason. Nack the Weasel is one of the best characters in the series, though.

Okay. This I kinda agree with. The level design is straight up lacking at times, the stages abuse the Christ of springs to the point where it's not even a gimmick, and Sonic Unleashed wishes it was as trial-and-error heavy as the last zone. Nack does have a lot of untapped potential though.

On-Topic: Um, Psychonauts? Don't know why anyone is saying DQ8 though.

On R/S and FF8

Both games have problems, like the issues a lot of fans have with Pokemon RS are not unfounded. But it's still a much better game then people give it credit for.

However, FF8 is in general much more liked than say, FF9 and FFT on an overall basis, and the game just is not as good. It's hard to say it's underated when you think about it like that.

It's not as liked as it should be!

Elevator Action 2

Fantastically fun arcade game that's way more advanced than the original. Fun variety of weapons and some different characters and some good, challenging stage design. The soundtrack is great too. Whenever I mention it though, I think people always assume I'm joking and it's a joke game.

I agree that Pokemon R/S is underrated. I didn't care much for it when it first came out; but when I played it again last year, I found that it was much more innovative, polished and outright fun than I remembered it being. The Gen III batch of Pokemon is extremely underrated as well: many of my all-time favorites came from that gen, such as Kecleon, Castform, and the Shuppet/Spoink lines.

I'd say Gen III is definitely underrated, but that R/S deserve it. It's Emerald that deserves the credit; it took EVERYTHING that was wrong with R/S, and turned it into a masterpiece.

I never played Emerald. Aside from adding the Battle Frontier, what's so different about it?

Paper Mario jumps to mind.

I just know way too many people who were like "I played it for five minutes, and I decided SMRPG was better." Or "I found the game too easy, therefore everything about the game is bad." Or "This game is kiddy, therefore bad."

The game design is absolutely fantastic. The balance is incredible. And the action commands manage to be important without being "all you have to do is memorize the timing and you'll beat this boss at level 1"--which means that it actually works well for challenge runs (unlike games where you can nullify all damage with button timings, where strategy ends up not mattering).

I haven't heard this complaint much but if so I agree with Paper Mario 64 being underrated especially to TTYD which I didn't find as charming

Chrono Cross

Because not being heralded as the best game ever is a crime.

Or Ulti logic: because one person hates it it's underrated.

Any way my answer:

Sonic Heroes

I think it has the best mixture of ideas from the Genesis and Adventure games in terms of level design and music style. The team system is probably a little too hated on since with the exception of times where you have to beat up a huge ass enemy with like 20 health and lots of armor before moving on, the level can mostly be played with the Speed character.

Also the level design is differnet enough in each Team (except MAYBE Sonic/Dark) where playing all 4 isn't that bad.

Get rid of that cheesy vocal music though lol

Tales of Legendia is pretty underrated. I don't know if it would be the most underrated game of all time to me though. I see nothing wrong with saying FF8 is underrated either.

tales of legendia probably works for this, yeah. when i got around to playing it i was confused why people were saying it was bad as it's fairly polished all around with a nice soundtrack to boot. the 'post game' stuff is also badass. R/S def has a good claim to this though.

but the one i'd say is the most underrated has to be wild arms 4. everyone **** on it only for some to play it years later and realize it's actually pretty good. just not wild arms.

in terms of games people don't talk about and probably haven't played: Lost Vikings 1 and 2 (2 also gets an additional nod for being slightly underrated for not being as "hard" as 1)

Final Fantasy Legend 3/SaGa 3.

Was really the only decent portable RPG game before Pokemon came along, but few people seem to know of it, much less played it.

Sonic Heroes would also be a good candidate.

Galactic Pinball was p cool.

Also played Plok a lot.

Legendia is bad, but it's just kind of bland and has a bad story and a couple obnoxious characters which is better compared to the flat out unplayable awfulness with brain cancer inducing storylines that the Tales series is outside of ToE/ToS/ToV/some of the Japanese only games.

And I enjoyed WA4, but it's still kinda sorta a bad game.

oh, yeah that's right. the topic.

I'd say Umihara Kawase is pretty interesting. Platformer with unique mechanics, a fairly advanced physics engine, multiple routes through the game, multiple ways to get through each stage if you've got the skill to pull off more advanced techniques, ability to record replays... in a japanese SNES game by a no name developer and published by a tv station. It seems like the thing people would eat up if it were an indie game released today on Steam or what have you, but because it's on the SNES and only in Japanese it gets ignored by "importers" because it's not an RPG.

I'm so glad someone else here has played Galactic Pinball. Seriously, if I was ever in one of those "deserted island" scenarios, that'd totally be one of the games I'd bring.
