Off the top of my head:

Sacrifice (PC)
Bucky O'Hare (NES....not sure how this isnt talked about as much as mega man 2)
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (PC)
Valkyria Chronicles (PS3....B8 gives it a fair amount of respect though)

Tempted to say Xenogears but honestly, it does receive a good bit of love.

The Legacy of Kain series. If I had to pick one I'd go with Defiance.

Bucky O'Hare (NES....not sure how this isnt talked about as much as mega man 2)

From what I've read at TASVideos, more people played it on a pirate cart than on legitimate copies, even before the days of emulation. But the game detected that and made you die in one hit to everything, making it even more like IWBTG.

the only people who ive met who give alpha centauri love are the people whove played it. Which is a small number, even if the turn based strategy crowd is already small. Alpha Centauri is pretty underrated. Its a top 50 game of all time, and ive never seen a list put it there.

interesting, never knew this. I knew of a code that you could implement to do the "one hit death" thing. I think at the selection screen you just type in the cheat code section "hard!" or something.

Yeah, there are a lot of excellent games that didn't sell well like Freespace and Freespace 2 (two of my favorite games of all time), but I'm hesitant to actually regard that as "underrated."

EDIT: But of course, I think Alpha Centauri sold decently well but still finds itself excluded from a lot of top lists, so I think I'd agree. It's also in my top ten.

Paper Mario jumps to mind.

I just know way too many people who were like "I played it for five minutes, and I decided SMRPG was better." Or "I found the game too easy, therefore everything about the game is bad." Or "This game is kiddy, therefore bad."

The game design is absolutely fantastic. The balance is incredible. And the action commands manage to be important without being "all you have to do is memorize the timing and you'll beat this boss at level 1"--which means that it actually works well for challenge runs (unlike games where you can nullify all damage with button timings, where strategy ends up not mattering).

It's definitely worth checking out if you can A) find it, or B) get it to run properly on your computer.

Probably one of the best soundtracks ever too. I only have two videogame soundtracks on my computer. Silent Hill 2 and The Neverhood.

Curious -- has Alpha Centauri aged well? As in, if I'm someone who has played Civ III and IV extensively, is it going to be difficult adapting to the interface/controls?

I've wanted to try it out for a while since I've always heard good things but never got around to it.

It probably has the 2nd best AI in any of the main sid meier games (civs 1-5, alpha centauri). But its a notch below civ 4.

The main thing about alpha centauri is at first, its very easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated. This is mainly because you design your own units, and the unit build screen can get bogged down with different prototypes if you frequently dont make older designs "obsolete" and thus not clogging down your menus.

But if you learn the ins and the outs of the game, its pretty much on part with civ 2 and civ 4, if not better in many aspects. Some of the wonders are overpowered (civ 4 is the first civ game that i felt had pretty balanced wonders) in AC, but its a pretty good game worth checking out. Its aged pretty well id say.

ya basically you choose from a chasis (infantry, land rover, sea foil, cruiser, etc), weapon (how you do damage), armor (defense), optional abilities (+50% defense vs native life forms, can do air drops, etc), and other stuff. Really unique. I read once that there is something like 40,000 potentially designed units.

Contact, for the DS. It's a very great and relaxing game that's legitimately artistic, and yet a lot of people didn't really dig it - I'll never understand why. A sequel has been rumored for years; I hope it happens some day!

Honorable mentions:

-Galactic Pinball (Virtual Boy). Anyone who hates the VB hasn't played this game. It's the best pinball game ever made, and "top 20 of all time" material.

-Left 4 Dead 2 (Various). It has one of the best casts in gaming, and you'd be hard-pressed to find something with better co-op. Also, forget the Portal games - this is Valve's masterpiece, from a comedic standpoint!

-Electroplankton (DS). Perhaps a little dated nowadays, as most early DS games are; but it's still a great, zen-like experience.

-Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2 and Tails Adventure (Game Gear). Every bit as good as the series' best on the Genesis, IMO.

That reminds me. Master of Orion II is also usually appropriately rated, but not many people have played it. The ship construction in that game is absolutely amazing.

In general I'd say turn-based strategy games age extremely well. It's kind of like how a board game conceived a century ago could still hold up perfectly well today.

I never liked Triple Trouble an awful lot, for whatever reason. Nack the Weasel is one of the best characters in the series, though.

Tails Adventure, on the other hand? Seriously epic. It's really creative, the graphics look better than many Game Boy Advance games, and the soundtrack rocks. It's not a conventional Sonic game by any means, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Triple Trouble is better than Sonic Chaos, and maybe Sonic Blast as well. But I think the level designs in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 were much more enjoyable; they were shorter, of course, but they also felt a lot more polished and exciting. But I don't dislike any of them - even Sonic Chaos is, like, a 6.5/10 in my book.
