What is your internet package like (as in, what are the advertised upload/download speeds) and how much does it cost? I just checked out the Verizon site and they have a 150MB/35MB plan for 195 bucks a month, which seems crazy. I seem to recall some countries offering 1GB service for around 50/month, so I'm wondering how the hell Verizon can get away with charging four times as much for 1/6 of the bandwidth.

30 Mbit/8 Mbit for the equivalent of $16 or so. This is about the standard price here, smaller companies offer even better deals, but the internet may be only 90-95% as reliable.

I believe in the UK at least, the government forced the companies that owned the cable landlines to let other companies use their landlines to give service, thus creating competition.
In the US, theres no such thing, so there are basically monopolies based on what area of the country you live in. The fact that the US is a much larger country than any european country has a lot to do with it as well.
Don't kid yourself. Us Americans have options, too!
Like me. I have cable internet (10 Mb down/1 Mb up) and I could easily switch to DSL (768k/128k or something like that), dial-up (56k, so it is super fast), satellite (super fast ping!), 3G/4G (5 GB caps are great), and maybe other things!
Then there's those rural areas, that only have 56k, satellite, and maybe 3G if they're lucky!
