Explanations like "well, only stupid people are into it" isn't enough - I can put myself in the position of a stupid person and imagine the appeal behind, say, doing cocaine, or watching Jersey Shore. Planking just doesn't even make sense on the most basic, fundamental level. What part of the normal human brain does lying flat on different kinds of objects typically appeal to? The best thing I can imagine is that it's some sort of ironic fad that people are doing because it makes no sense, just to be ironic.
