American character, completely unknown in Japan, that didn't originate from a game, that hasn't been in anything for 20 years, and it's confusing figuring out who owns the rights to the original characters.

I would have thought Mega Man, but given that Capcom seems to no longer consider him their mascot, I'm going to say that if Capcom gets a guest character in, it would probably be whoever is most likely to have a major game come out directly after the SSB game.
