Not Dave posted... what is this SMW hating in this topic
you're all terrible people
I don't hate SMW! For me it's just the "weak link" among the big five Mario platformers, but I still consider myself a big fan of SMW.
Rather unrelated question: how many people here prefer the Final Fantasy and/or Metal Gear franchises to the Legend of Zelda franchise? I have a feeling that I might be joining you guys eventually.

Currently Playing - Mega Man 2 Hopefully Next Up - Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Brood War
Oh yes. Wait WHY IS THERE IS A BOY IN A BANDANA ON A BIRD
After a run of awesome SNES launch games, we come to a crashing halt here. (Though I did love the hell out of Super Baseball Simulator 1000.)
I'm just going to post all the character art. Also, they refer to ATB as "real time battles".
Top 30 -
Next month we start doing SNES top 30s. My guess: 1.) Mario World 2.) FF2 3.) F-Zero 4.) Pilotwings 5.) Actraiser. I skipped the GB one because it wasn't worth posting.. not that this one is either. The most notable thing is TMNT2 falling off a little and FF1 regaining its rightful place at #2.

"But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed."
Also, I had a brief subscription to Nintendo Power back in the N64 days. I think I still have them laying around somewhere.
GamePro was where it was at for me though! I had a subscription there for like almost 15 years until I moved away to college (By then, I had already discovered GameFAQs, and the internet was practically making having a magazine subscription obsolete anyway). I think I still have every GamePro issue from 1996 to like 2006 in my closet.
GamePro is the worst. They stole my money. I sent in for a subscription renewal and it didn't renew. Guess it's possible it got lost in the mail or something but damn they were such jackasses when I was like "hey I sent money and it didn't renew"
-- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love!
Funny, I thought this game was called Return of Samus.
TOC -
Actraiser, yay. Batman 2, Pilotwings, and a Ninja Gaiden GB game that I didn't even know existed. NP is also teasing some kind of new and improved stuff next month -- maybe a top 30 for all three systems.
Not sure what to think of this art.
Check out this Actraiser hype. Graphics as good as a work of art!
Actraiser's coverage is deceiving. They show the arcade stages without showing any of the simulation!
GB Top 30 -
I feel like established series get an automatic ratings boost on the GB. Either that or there are no good unique games on the system.
Actraiser has horrid control. I didn't know Atlus put out a 4 player golf game on the NES.
Top 30 -
TMNT2 passes FF1 by the slimmest of margins. Mario 2 continues its slow ascent and squeezes into the top 10 at Zelda's expense. I can't believe Dragon Warrior 2 has stayed in the top 10 for a year. Happy to see Crystalis still hanging out in the top 5 a year later though. It really is too bad that it's been forgotten in comparison to other NES games. All the other NES games lived on through sequels and became big franchises. Crystalis is a one-and-done.
Mega Man 4, ZELDA 4, Tecmo Super Bowl, Super Off Road and SCV4. Good issue. No idea what that NES/SNES advertisement is.
Tecmo Super Bowl -- super realistic.
There's a huge LTTP comic in NP. It basically mirrors LTTP up until you rescue Zelda... but then Agahnim takes her back. Alright.
And this Mario one... is a comic alright.
ZELDA 4 coverage is pretty minimal. it just outlines the basic feature set of LTTP.
Ratings -
SCV4 kills everything. Tecmo Super Bowl does surprisingly poor. Pit Fighter doesn't do poorly enough.
Top 20 -
:( Top 30 or gtfo. Hopefully they bump it up after the SNES gets 30 games. ZELDA 4 hype pushes Zelda 1 all the way up to #3 while Zelda 2 languishes at #17. Metroid coverage pushes it to the top 10. Mario 3 is back to doubling second place. RPGs take a major hit as FF1 drops to 7, Crystalis falls out of the top 10 and DW2 all the way down to 15. Mega Man 1 refuses to die.
SNES is no surprise. Mario World kills everything, though I kinda expected it to dominate even more. LTTP makes the top 10 despite almost no coverage up to that point. After this issue it'll probably be #2. We finally see points in the GB top 10 as Mario Land doubles second/third place while second/third place nearly double fourth. Metroid 2 soars to #2 and will probably stay there a while. There's also some game called Final Fantasy Adventure II in here.
Issue 33 - February 1992 - TMNT3: The Manhattan Project
Ah, the forgotten Turtles game.
TOC -
Licensed games zone. I love the hell out of SNES Rampart.
LET'S FIND APRIL! THEN WE'LL GET THAT BOGARD SHREDDER.
Link is such a wuss in these LTTP comics.
And in the world of stupid Mario comics, the Minister of Massage is top tier.
The Super Scope 6. What the hell does the 6 mean anyway?
Reviews -
Bad set of games this month. Rampart is the star of a weak cast. Kinda weird how they previewed the SNES version and rated the NES one. I wonder if they just made a mistake.
Top 20 -
You know, I miss the simplicity of the NES top 30. Something about it just looks cramped and impure when they went to three systems. Anyway, not much going on with the NES list - the only notable is Mega Man 4 showing up and TMNT2 falling all the way to #14. On the SNES, I had no idea Super Bases Loaded was ever popular enough to reach #5. FF2 is sucking ass, wow. F-Zero gets pretty close to Mario World.
Final Fantasy > Zelda confirmed. Also, Zelda is an RPG confirmed.
Issue 34 - March 1992 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Is that a boy or a girl?
TOC -
MM2 GB, Lemmings, LTTP. The rest, yeah.
This guy's lack of a neck is cracking me up. He is on every page of this Nightshade preview.
Man, talk about taking creative liberty. I thought you just ran into the bookshelf using the Pegasus Boots.
.....oh my god.
Al Cologne. Never forget.
These Mario comics are exceptionally stupid. Ed Bellis would love this.
Link to the Past is such an upgrade on Zelda 1. Yow.
Nintendo Power award voting -
My picks (not gonna bother with GB)-
Graphics/Sound - NES: Battletoads, SNES: Actraiser Theme/Fun - NES: Startropics, SNES: Mario World Challenge - NES: Ninja Gaiden 3, SNES: Super Ghouls and Ghosts Play Control: NES: Uhhh Battletoads I guess, SNES: Mario World Multiplayer: Tecmo Super Bowl Villain: Dark Queen Innovative: FF2 Overall: NES: Tecmo Super Bowl, SNES: FF2
Too bad LTTP wasn't out in time to compete with Mario World.
Ratings -
LTTP really goes big. Lemmings does well too. NES and GB don't have much; Empire Strikes Back is decent and MM2 looks good for a GB game.
Top 20 -
TMNT2 goes from like #14 to #3. Zelda and Mario 2 both beat FF1. It seems a pretty common theme is for older games to make a big comeback after a sequel releases. Mario 2 comes back after Mario World, Zelda 1 hits top 5 after LTTP's release, TMNT2 soars after TMNT3's release, etc. Mega Man 4 is so bad that it actually drags MM3 down ten spots. On the SNES and GB sides, nothing is really happening. SNES needs LTTP to come along and demolish everything. SCV4 can't even beat out UN Squadron and Super Bases Loaded to make the top 10.
CES -
Nintendo actually announced the CDROM attachment? I wonder what the story is behind that. Some notable games - SF2, TMNT4, Blaster Master 2 coming out for the SNES, huh? I wonder what "Super Battletoads" is, if it's Battletoads & Double Dragon or some game that never got made. Oh CES, you're so crazy.
1989 is probably the NES's best year in America. Mega Man 2 came over here, Dragon Warrior is finally coming, Ninja Gaiden, Mario 3 on the horizon -- lots of good stuff happening. Looks like we've got some awards for it being the one year anniversary of NP, too.
Nester Awards -
Wow, Mario 2 cleaned up but didn't take Best Game. Haha, Mario 2 won best ending. I have no idea how it beat out Bionic Commando which was one of the nominees. Mario and Zelda dominated these things, man.
Nothing too notable in the MM2 section. The game is obviously done and just being localized.
Dragon Warrior preview has crazy art. They acknowledge it being the first DW game despite the audience having no idea.
Top 30 -
What the hell is up with Metal Gear? 3 -> 23 -> 7. Track and Field 2 finally gets on the board at #5. I guess it takes a while from this ridiculous preview coverage to people owning the game to being able to vote for the game. Zelda 2 finally brings the Mario 2 dominance to a close. Zelda 1 refuses to go away while Mario 1 returns to the top 30 this month. Mega Man 2 drops to 30. Why am I analyzing this
Link as Most Popular Character huh?
I am beyond shocked.

The Super Scope 6 was thusly named because it came with 6 games.
Kinda dumb.
Also I wonder if TMNT 3 is the final NES game to make the cover. I suppose we'll find out together!
...man I hope the GBA had something going on during that 6-month gap between the end of the N64 and the debut of the Gamecube, otherwise those are gonna be some dull ass issues.

transience posted... Issue 17 - Final Fantasy Strategy Guide - November 1990
For those who don't know, I've beaten this game at least 30 times and maybe as many as 50. I love this game. I learned everything I knew about NES FF1 from this guide.
So much good info on these pages. Stats, spells, monsters, HP, weapons, armour, stuff you couldn't possibly know on your own.
BORS, LEE, JED, TOTH. Fighter, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage. These names live on for a lot of old NP fans.
To this day, I still have no idea how anyone could find the airship. "Nintendo Power bait", indeed.
The end. It's so hard to pick out pages of a strategy guide. I may start skipping them except for notable games from now on. I lost it at "I admire Nicolas Cage as an actor the most because..."
