World > 3 I have to concur with tranny here - Mario World seriously lacks diversity in comparison to Mario 3, and I find Mario 64 to suffer from the same problem to some extent (not true with either Mario Galaxy though). Hey Jeff, what's your ranking of the mainline Mario platformers? Mine would be SMB3 > SMG2 >= SMG1 > SM64 > SMW, and this is the only VG franchise which I feel that I can consider myself to be a "big fan" of (not a huge fan of Legend of Zelda, and I want to consider myself a huge Metroid fan but beyond Super Metroid and Prime, what the heck is there?). It's easy to love World more when you played it first and it's so much more colorful. I don't deny 3 is probably technically the superior game but the beauty of World is awesome. By contrast, when you play SMB1 first, then SMB2, then SMB3, and finally World, then World is thoroughly underwhelming. Each one of the first three has a very different look and feel, introduced several new characters and special abilities. And then World comes along, and...is basically a re-run of SMB3, with fewer powers, fewer worlds, less creative worlds (compare giant world, ice world, and pipe world to like...cave world, whatever the theme is supposed to be for doughnut plains, and chocolate world which sounds awesome until you realize it's basically just a pallet swap that actually looks pretty ugly, and the enemies are nothing to do with chocolate or even candy). -- Cats land on their feet. I like SoM more than SD3, mostly for the mulitplayer since all the characters are easy to use and in SD3 you can have friend join but he'll have no idea what to do with the characters. Also I feel like SD3 has a bunch of padding with the mana beasts and having to find rare drops to upgrade to the last class (yeah I know Sage Joch but at least his stuff was short)
Music and atmosphere is lot better in SoM than SD3, SoM had the more fairy tale look and charm with it while SD3 felt so generic JRPG. -- http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/33/shadowkenj.gif LOL!!!! I hope that's a joke....names don't get more n00bish than that ... Copied to Clipboard!

I barley found any music from SD3 memorable, and all the areas in SD3 feel so cliche and been there done that. Not like SoM with stuff like that forest of seasons, the Walrus Village with Santa Claus, the Mushroom Village, the desert with the stars and space ocean, and the sunken continent with a subway full of zombies. Despite the lack of sidequests, I still enjoy going back to places in that game even if there's nothing to do, whereas in SD3 once your done in an area there's no reason to go back.
And I played SoM with a lot of casuals who can easily use Randi or Purim, yet have no idea what to do with any of the SD3 characters besides Kevin and mash. -- http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/33/shadowkenj.gif LOL!!!! I think it's also that the exploration in SMW is a higher QUALITY than even later Mario games. Like both NSMB games have a few levels with hidden exits, and sometimes it does lead to a different level, but after that one level you're back on the main path again. But in World you had stuff like the branch at the beginning of the Vanilla Dome that didn't rejoin the main path until Forest of Illusion, two worlds later.
