as far as I can tell, it's between Portal 2, Skyrim and Skyward Sword. normally Zelda would be an auto-win but the Wii is held in such contempt now and buzz seems to be at an all-time low for a mainline Zelda game.
some darkhorse candidates are Uncharted 3, Arkham City and Assassin's Creed: Revelations, though I can't see them topping the other three unless they're just a big flop. Diablo 3 would be the ultimate darkhorse but that's probably not going to be out this year. Battlefield 3 and MW3 would be threats on any other website, but this here is GameFAQs.

are you suggesting it'll happen again or just playing devil's advocate? I'd get behind a MW3 argument if you could make one, but COD's kinda sucked since then.
From: Achromatic | #005 Did Modern Warfare 2 win it one year or am I imagining that.
Yeah, it beat Uncharted 2, Batman, and Assassin'd Creed II. Western games have a two-year winning streak going on here, whereas I don't think a Western game has ever even won before (I suppose Prime counts, though it's a hybrid). Doubt Zelda will give the West a hat trick tbqh.

I dunno - Oblivion got what, 44% on Wind Waker? Skyrim looks to be bigger than Oblivion and Skyward Sword is on the lol Wii. WRPGs are exploding here too, with ME2 doing so well last year and blitzing a FF game. I'll roll the dice.
GotY voting isn't based on how much people actually like the game. Modern Warfare 2 almost lost to Dissidia in a contest setting and it won GotY here easily. Name brand and recognition matter far more than anything else.
and as for Portal 2, it's a full-fledged Portal game that has tons of praise from both critics and fans and its originator put up like 45% on RE4. I'd hate to count that game out.

It also came out in the beginning of the year, which would work against it because it's not fresh in people's minds.

"Calling Pokemon RBY a top 10 game was the most insane contest jibba-jabba ever Woe unto he who sig bets with the near-invincible Lord High creativename
if that was true, why did Black Ops lose to everything under the sun? I think COD games hit a peak from 2007-2009 and then dropped hard after that. just like Halo did with Halo 3.
MW3/BF3 will hurt each other, yeah. put them together in a multiplatform poll with Portal and Skyrim and it'll be tough for them to perform well. hopefully Bacon does two days of multiplatform stuff again.
I just see the hype for Skyrim being way higher than Skyward Sword. I think SS would win if everybody got it, but I haven't seen a topic talking about it for months.
check out the top 100 list here --
7 7 7 243 Xbox 360 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 86 96 4 433 Wii The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Skyrim's a little inflated because some footage came out a few days ago, but still. Skyward Sword is like the anti-hype right now. hopefully Nintendo cranks it up soon or else people are not going to realize it's out.
ME2 was in a pretty sub-par year though (SMG2 isn't as popular here as it should be). Stick Portal 2 in that year and it would fight with ME2 for the win as well.

Skyward Sword is probably a safe enough bet. Probably a lock if there's a Wii GotY poll since I can't really think of anything big that came out on it this year.
Galaxy 2 sucking it up last year is a knock against Skyward Sword, I think. people have just moved on from the Wii.
Mario =/= Zelda.
While it's true that people are going against the Wii, there's still a huge chunk of people on this site that would die for the next Zelda game. I hope you're right as I would really love Skyrim to win this, but I don't see it happening.
Justin_Crossing posted... From: tazzyboyishere | #029 Actually, if OoT3D will be on the polls, I'll go with that. Chrono Trigger DS did really poorly.
People never vote for ports in these.
Well it is a port of what is by far the most loved game on the site, and it'll probably end up carrying the 3DS through a majority of the year. I don't think it's reasonable to just throw it out of the race. Hell, if this and SS get in the championship poll, they may SFF each other enough to let 3 other games through.

Dark Souls winning would be nice though (as some other candidates...there are a LOT of releases in November lol)
you know, this is a good point. with everything and their mother coming out in November (UC3, MW3, AC2-3, Skyrim, Zelda, not to mention BF3 and Batman in October), Portal 2 might actually have an advantage.
With the release schedule being so stacked through the last three months of the year I could see a lot of these big names cannibalising each other. I'll say Zelda, or if it doesn't release, Portal 2. Small chance for UC3 to get near Portal 2 - it being exclusive should mean it gets an inflated playership relative to the other big names.

Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!)
It's folly to predict this in August when we don't even know if some of these games are any good yet. An incredible Zelda game will stomp anything else here, but a mediocre one could enhance the Nintendo backlash and be defeated.

And hopefully we can add SW:TOR to that November release list...
