In short Im planning to run around 50-60 mini-contests over about a 3-4 week period of videogame characters competing in Olympic events. Voters would vote under various formats for which character or team would win in such of an event.
Im in the early stages of planning and with the massive nomination drive that would be required the contest wont start in a long while. Also if SBAllen decides to have a Character Battle this year this project will be pushed to the beginning of 2012.
Right now Im just wondering if people would be interested in voting in such a contest. Also I can answer any early questions about the project.

BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest.
My initial list of events has 68 events so some will be removed, any suggestions about inclusion/removal.
Archery Individual Team
Teams would have 3 members.
Athletics 100m Run 10000m Run 100m Flying 10000m Flying Long Jump Pole Vault Shot Put Pentathlon 4x100m Relay
I really shortened this sport to a handful of events. I added a short and long distance event for flyers since I consider it different from running. The pentathlon will include 100m Run, 10000m Run, Long Jump, Pole Vault and Shot Put.
Badminton Individual Doubles
Based on the popularity of the sport on this board doubles may be removed.
Boxing Tournament
For those wondering about the difference between the four fighting sports, boxing is about punching.
Basketball Team
Teams will be made up of 5-12 members.
Canoeing C-1 1000m C-2 1000m C-4 1000m
The C stands for canoe and the number is how many people will be on board. I feel C-2 1000m is a likely candidate for removal.
Cycling Road Race Sprint Team Sprint Cross Country BMX
I may remove an event from this category.
Diving 3m Springboard 3m Synchronized Springboard
Equestrian Jumping Cross Country
Cross Country isn't an olympic event, but it is part of the Eventing event. I'm also wondering if I should limit this sport to only horses or add other ridable animals.
Fencing Individual Team
Team will be made up of 3 members
Field Hockey Team
Teams will be made up of 11-16 members.
Football Team
Teams will be made up of 11-18 members.
Gymnastics Individual All-Around Team All-Around Rhythmic Individual All-Around Rhythmic Team All-Around Trampoline
One of the rhythmic events will be removed. Teams will have 5 members.
Handball Team
Teams will be made up of 7-14 members.
Judo Tournament
Judo is about throwing your opponent.
Modern Pentathlon Individual
Modern Pentathlon includes; Archery, Shooting, 200m freestyle swim, 3000m running and equestrian jumping.
Rowing Single Sculls Double Sculls Quadruple Sculls Eight
The middle numbers are candidates for removal.
Sailing Sailboard Star Class
Sailboard is a 1 person boat while the Star Class is a 2 person boat.
Shooting 50m Pistol 50m Rifle 3 Positions Skeet
In Skeet you shoot either 1 or 2 clay targets that are launched into the sky. I'm going to allow characters to use their own non-homing weapon in the Skeet event so as an example Mega Man would be given a Pistol or Rifle in the first two events, but he can use his blaster in Skeet.

Swimming 100m Freestyle 1500m Freestyle 100m Fish 1500m Fish 4x100m Relay
I added fish events since swimmers are required to start out of water and dive into the poll which puts Fishes at a disadvantage.
Synchronized Swimming Duet Team
A team has 8 members. I'm probably only going to choose one of these events. Also males are allowed to compete here.
Table Tennis Tournament
Taekwondo Tournament
In Taekwondo you score points based on the amount of kicks you deliver to your opponent
Tennis Singles Doubles
Triathlon Individual
Volleyball Beach Volleyball Indoor Volleyball
In Beach Volleyball there will be 2 members and in Indoor Volleyball there will be 6-12 members
Water Polo Team
Teams will be made up of 6-13 members.
Weightlifting Individual
Wrestling Freestyle Wrestling
In wrestling to objective is to pin your opponent.
Other Sports Baseball Golf Rugby 7s
While they aren't olympic sports Baseball was one in 2008 while Golf and Rugby 7s will be one in 2016. This is also a place where you can suggest a non-olympic sport.

Are you going to have different delegations based on developer or something like that? That way you have something to base the teams on. It's also where you would have to start getting a list of characters that are competing.
I was thinking of spliting them by game/universe so FFVI and FFVII would be different teams while FFX and FFX-2 would be the same team. I also plan to split Mario and Donkey Kong.

You'll have a lot of delegations to deal with then. I would think it would be better to have a bigger delegation so that you don't have the same characters competing in all the events. Some delegations would be bigger than others, just like it is in the olympics.
You'll have a better medals competition then too with the bigger developers competing to see who can rack up more medals (nintendo, sqare, etc), which could feel more like the big countries competing broad scale.
It's certainly an ambitious project but could be really cool once the details were hashed out.
The main problem I see is the creation of teams in the team events. There's only so many developers that the board cares about so we'll be having the same teams competing in all team sports. I could do a company along with a team medal count.
As for a single character competing in many sports I'm hoping that the nominators will nominate characters that fit in or at least the voters know that character may not be the best in that sport. For example I wouldn't mind seeing Link in Archery, Equestrian, Fencing and Sailing because he's actually had experience in those sports, but should he make it into Boxing I hope the voters will at least acknowledge that someone like Little Mac would be better.

3D Realms Acclaim Activision Atlus Blizzard Capcom Eidos Electronic Arts Epic Games Interplay Koei Konami Microsoft Midway Games Namco Nintendo Rockstar Games Sega SNK Playmore Sony Square Enix Taito Tecmo THQ Ubisoft Rare Valve
Could always split Square Enix into Square, Enix, and Square Enix based on what games were actually published by each of the three.
Publisher seems like a decent split so you have many publishers with characters available. There are 27 of them there which could be a few more delegations if you wanted to do that.
And I see you've discussed the team sports thing...in the real olympics there are only a handful of countries that have a team in each of the team sports. So you often see the US, China, Germany, etc with a team in each sport.
Some delegations might just be one character (Duke Nukem), again similar to the real olympics.
If you go by game/universe how do you limit the teams? For each Final Fantasy game you could field a team for each sport. If you go by publisher you could limit the team events to 8 teams and not be depleting the characters in each delegation. And you could limit characters to appearing, say, 4 times in the entire olympics. Or 4 times in team sports and 4 times in individual sports. Or something like that.
I don't know, just some thoughts I had. And they are jumbled, sorry. Just thinking out loud (aka on paper (aka online)).
The plan is to cap the number of teams in team events. In all of the team sports there will be 8/12/16 teams competing and in individual events that includes a bracket there will be 16/24/32 characters other individual events will have to be based on how long the event will last.
I don't really want to force a cap on characters as I hope the nominators won't get too character happy on a handful of characters. I'll just see how things add up and work it from there.
For example if Link, Mario, Sonic, Mega Man and Cloud end up in 20 events I'll probably drop them in events that they were nominated in the least, but say they end up in 6-7 events I'll probably leave them.

Link knows how to box, though. He beat Blaino in a boxing match and Blaino is capable of punching you hard enough to throw you out of a dungeon.

Pokemon VGC2011 NW Regional - Top 8 Pokemon VGC2011 US Nationals - 54th place
Also yeah GameFAQs rules for videogame characters will be in play, so they must originate from a videogame.
Dang, no Batman.
My only issue with teams by company is that Nintendo is going to be ridiculously stacked. And so many great characters will have no chance of participating because of how many other characters there are to nominate.
Which brings up another point. Are you going to limit how many people each team can "bring"? So like we would have to decide before it begins who Nintendo or whoever was bringing and then chose from that pool for the actual events?

do that event where people run around then shoot at targets
But Biathlon is a winter sport.
Link knows how to box, though.

The plan is to have nomination for all of the events, so who is in what team won't be known until nominations for all events end.
