I tried getting back into FFIV/VI recently, and they were just too bogged down with obtuse dialogue/exposition and slow-to-build gameplay for my tastes. Still classics, but they lacked that pick up and play quality I was looking for. But FFV? Oh man, I've been playing for two hours straight with no plans of slowing down. I get that it's not the best implementation of the class system in the series- hi, Tactics- but it's an excellent system within a jRPG and without the frills of needless, convoluted story holding it back.
So yeah, discuss.

The story of Final Fantasy V is Karl Boss comes out of the water to attack your ship and you discover how totally awesome job systems are then you say hi to Gilgamesh for a while before saving the world.
That's all there really is to it.

ONLY FIVE CAN LADDER. Sushi, kamikaze, fujiyama, nippon-ichi...
Saying VI has a better story than V is like saying a puppy is more ferocious than a kitten: yeah, I guess, but are you *really* spending time with cute little animals for their viciousness? Not exactly the strong suit there.

I rarely consider "bogged down with story" a negativity, I mean hell, my favorite game is Xenogears. But if the story doesn't interest me as much obviously I'm going to care less and less.
FFIV's story and even FFVI's just don't move me too terribly much.

I think VI had a good story considering the era...I was mesmerized my first time playing through it...and most kittens are more ferocious than most puppies...
the story is usually the most important aspect of an rpg to me...though if the gameplay is horrific it really doesnt matter...that is why lunar and xenogears are in my top 5...though my exception would be star ocean 2 (not a bad story, but that isnt what made it for me)

From his looks Magus is Macho Man Randy Savage as an anime zombie. The black wind howls, and one of you will snap into a Slim Jim ooh yeeeah! -sonicblastpunch

See, how is this even possible? Most RPGs have horrendous stories.

WazzupGenius00 posted... I've never understood people who primarily play games for their stories
Read a book for god's sake, there are thousands of them with better stories than any video game has ever had.
Oh please. You're undeniably almost right but there are a few games out there with very good stories. Xenogears, FFT, MGS3 -- these are three of them.
Is Tad Wiliams' "Otherland" better? Probably. Does that make Xenogears' story bad? Not in the slightest and I'll enjoy it several times just the same, thanks.
I'm reading books all the freakin' time and I still enjoy the gaming industry for its ability to tell some pretty good stories on occasion.

I find myself thinking about FF6's plot very often. Same with CT.
But then again, as I said, those are the only two RPGs I've beaten, so maybe I should shut up. Maybe I'll come back once I'm done with DOUBLE F SEVEN.

Just bumping to reconfirm that, yes, I am falling more and more in love with this game. Bartz (or in this game, Luke) is really growing on me. It's also got the best box art in the series, by the way! I feel that's pretty important!

Sorry to quote this again, but I forgot to mention that Kefka is my favorite video game character of all time.

Many people find FFVI's plot incredibly compelling. It could have been better for me if there were more dialogue to support it but that wasn't exactly commonplace to say the least back in 1994.
I'd still give it a solid 8.2 or so as far as all of JRPGs goes.
