I definitely don't hate the first game personally. I do not care for "Labyrinth Zone, Act 3" in the least so I'm pretty stereotypical about that but otherwise it's a decent enough game that's blown away by all its Genesis sequels and Colors. And Generations unless the demo featured the only competent part of the game or something. And probably the Sonic Adventure titles too.

I think I mentioned this in that other Sonic topic we had, but I really love the first one and am willing to admit nostalgia may be a key component. you can't always think clearly about a game you've been playing since you were five.

I definitely think it's a lot better than Colors. I regard all the Genesis ones as pretty close together in quality. Something I appreciate about 1 is how it is the heaviest in platforming in the series. The further you go in the series the more the "super sonic speed" creeps into the gameplay but the first one is mostly a good platformer with occasional loop-de-loops thrown in.

I feel so bad for all the people who still haven't played SCD. I can't even finish the other games anymore.

I've beaten it a couple times, I'm not a huge fan. Level design seems a little chaotic. Not a bad game at all but I wouldn't put it up there with the Genesis ones personally!

Yeah, CD is awesome and totally underrated. I'd probably put S&K > 2 > 3 > 1.

Sonic CD? I've totally played it. Don't agree with you though, Epyo! As it has already been stated, I feel it's too chaotic for its own good somehow.

Out of curiosity, what's with the Sonic 2 hate? I've always felt it wasn't as good as 3&K by a bit of a landslide but it's the uber-popular breadwinner of the family. While I don't agree that it's that good I still think it's pretty great. I'm sure Board 8 as a whole is a bit higher-brow than to have users slam it just because it's the FFVII of Hedgehogs, so what's the deal?

when I criticize Sonic 2, I always qualify that I think it's really good too. just not as good as 1 or 3&K.

issues I have with 2:
-Casino Night and Oil Ocean aren't so hot. Metropolis definitely isn't.
-the two parts of the final boss part are unpleasant. give me some rings and I'd probably think it's alright, but without them you gotta play it safe and it sucks.
-least interesting beginning level. green hill is iconic, Angel Island is something interesting and different, Emerald Hill Zone just seems kind of there in comparison.
-the bonus stages are the worst of the genesis games, and the goal posts making you lose your rings when you go into them isn't good either.

I like Oil Ocean!

But yeah, Sonic 2 is good. Just not in S3&K's league.

1.) I like Casino Night. Oil Ocean is OK in the sense that it's something unique within the Genesis era. Metropolis... I love/hate it. I quite enjoy its difficulty apart from the incredible cheapness of the enemy design which I know we've already discussed.

2.) True. I still prefer them over what we get at the end of 1 though!

3.) Emerald Hill is cooler than Green Hill for me. I love those checkered bronze blocky rope... things. Angel Island for life though.

4.) Tails screwing you up all the time unless you've got a friend over is pretty inexcusable. I like the bonus stages so long as I've got someone halfway-competent playing with me. Blue Sphere is easily the best though.

Also, I feel bad for all the users who obviously didn't grow up with Sonic Spinball. Wait, no I don't.

it's also good to discuss what 3&K does well that 2 doesn't.

-Finding big rings is pretty neat. Makes you feel like you've explored your way into a secret and you're excited that you get a shot at an emerald, with no real penalty. Compare to 2 where you have to have 50 rings going into the goal post, the goal posts are in plain sight, and you start at zero rings when you're done. They're not secret, attempting a bonus stage is a tradeoff, and if you're actively trying to get the emeralds it's stressful because any bad guy that hits you ruins your chances for your next goal post.

-The new bubbles are cool. In 1 and 2 it's just worth an extra hit. In 3&K you're looking at neat powerups which are fun to use. Just a better idea.

-Lots of alternative paths. 1 and 2 both have this to some degree but it's really quite pronounced in 3&K. Alternate paths for various characters, alternate paths you can stumble onto with anyone, good stuff.

CD = 3&K > 2 > 1

yeah that's definitely true. final boss of 1 is a letdown for sure.

S3&K and 2 are pretty close. 1 is significantly worse, but not bad.

CD doesn't get mentioned because it doesn't deserve to. Easily one of the worst games I've played in my entire life. So terrible.

I always wanted to take advantage of his flying Sonic places in 3 but could never get a friend who wanted to slave away as Tails. if my friend was playing Tails, he was probably trying to kill me.

1.) Yeah, locating all the super rings is wonderful by comparison. Some Sonic 2 diehards have commented in their defense of the goal post mechanic that it's a matter of strategizing when to go for the emeralds but I tend to disagree; generally speaking the sooner the better and this sort of negates alleged tactics.

2.) The shields in 3&K are terrific. One of my absolute favorite platformer mechanics ever beyond a shadow of a doubt. I love how each of the trio offers a very unique experience. Lightning draws rings to you and lets you bounce an extra jump. Fire makes you impervious to flame-based attacks and gives you a mid-air dash. Water bounces you off of the ground, provides protection against drowning and is the only of the three that doesn't dissipate when you enter water (obviously).

3.) Look up level maps for 3&K sometime and then compare them to 1 and 2. It will only further prove your point if you haven't seen them yet. Stages like "Marble Garden Zone, Act 2" are just enormous and chock full of that. Very cool.

Not really into those Dr. Mario kinds of games. Not my thing. I can respect their game design (and MBM seems even better about it from what I've seen) but eh. Not my gig at all. I'm also probably the only user on B8 who dislikes Tetris so take that as you will. Also, inb4 someone goes "I take that as JZ is a horrible user". 'Tis what it 'tis, I hold no regrets!

Yeah, Spinball is... oi. It's kind of cool if you get super-rad at it but otherwise it's immensely frustrating. The music, art design and a couple of the messages that sprout up at the top of the screen are pretty morbid by Sonic standards though. It's worth at least watching a Let's Play for once so you can see what I'm talking about.

What the f***! Also, the bosses all look f***ing evil as hell and you get to see a bunch of animals getting zapped inside the machine that converts them into monsters. It's... huh. Different.

that's some sample footage, I assume on an emulator because the sound is kind of off (usually sounds better)

goal is to either get your professor to the bottom or make the other guy's hit the spikes up top. professor will climb up any block dropped on him.
