Oh, I was including PSX games into the PS2 library. What genre in particular is "your genre"? jRPGs? Platformers?
JRPGs, mainly, although I'm kind of "too mainstream for my own good" still, currently, in that I haven't played anything from Shin Megami Tensei and barely any Suikoden. Working on that as well as getting into Dragon Quest properly. (Wow, I sound like LMS.)
Platformers are probably my second-favorite though. Love Genesis Sonic, enjoy Mario, quite enjoy Mega Man.

Dauntless Hunter posted... Backwards compatibility obviously doesn't count towards "best ever" status and people who try to pretend it does are the worst.
I make a distinction.
Anything a console can do counts towards determining "Best Console Ever."
Only the games that are actually released for the system count towards which console has the "Best Library."

if that's the case we can just call the PC the best console ever and have no argument from anyone!
Honestly I think PC almost certainly has a better library than any console too, since it spans decades and includes a fair amount of ports from consoles.
Depends on what genres you like though. For the life of me I can't imagine anyone putting the PS1 over the PS2 unless they just REALLY love JRPGs.

Omar, I usually agree with what you think. But Genesis > SNES? How? Pick a genre, and I guarantee that the Super Nintendo wins handily. In fact, this could be a fun experiment!

oh also! Genesis has the best action games. Gunstar Heroes, Shinobi III, Mega Turrican vs the Super Turrican games, all I can think offhand. If you really want to stretch it you can probably count Super Metroid but even then it's still in favor of the Genesis.
RPGs are pretty one sided if you count Japan only releases but if it's only US it's closer. Phantasy Star and Shining Force are notable, at least. Genesis loses either way but it's not a smackdown if you only count US releases!
Turtles in Time is balanced by Hyperstone Heist, I think. They're practically the same game and both really fun.
Yeah I was thinking about Super Metroid and Super Castlevania IV. I don't know that SM even has an equivalent on the Genesis, and certainly nothing as good. Super Castlevania IV is... a platformer? Action-adventure? I don't even know! In any case, Castlevania Bloodlines is better than Super Castlevania IV by just a tad, so they can probably cancel out. And we haven't mentioned them, but each system's Contra game probably does the same.
Super Nintendo wins racing handily. Super Mario Kart, F-Zero, three Top Gear games. The Genesis has three Road Rash games and a not great port of one of the Top Gears. I'd say that's pretty one sided.

From his looks Magus is Macho Man Randy Savage as an anime zombie. The black wind howls, and one of you will snap into a Slim Jim ooh yeeeah! -sonicblastpunch
Fighting games were better on SNES. Both systems got most of the same ones, but apart from Mortal Kombat 1, the SNES versions were usually superior. The main point of difference I can think of is Genesis's Eternal Champions vs SNES's Killer Instinct, which I'd say is strongly in favor of SNES.

Phantasy Star and Shining Force are pretty good, I'll give you that.
But they are facing FF IV and VI, CT, Secret of Mana, Ogre Battle, Earthbound, and Lufia II.
"Not a smackdown" ok bud

Uh you said Super Nintendo wins, not Super Famicom wins. Try again!
lol. I think it's fair to include Japanese games for both the Genesis and SNES.
think it wins in platformers, though just barely.
Sonic 1-3+K, Ristar and Rocket Knight Adventures
vs
Super Mario World 1 and 2, DKC 1 and 2, and Do-Re-Mi Fantasy
I'll take the first set.
You're missing a *ton* for the SNES set. Super Mario All-Stars, Megaman 7 and X1-3, Rockman & Forte, Kirby Super Star and Kirby's Dreamland 3... probably a few more I'm missing.
strategy another good one for Genesis. Herzog Zwei and Dune II vs not much!
SNES has Fire Emblems 3, 4, and 5, Treasure Hunter G, Bahamut Lagoon, Front Mission, Tactics Ogre, and a handful of very good Super Robot Wars games.
And I just want to be clear about how much the SNES devastates the Genesis in terms of RPGs. We've already covered SRPGs, but it's also true for jRPGs (obvious) and action RPGs (Terranigma, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu III).
As a bonus, the SNES has the best puzzle game ever in Panel de Pon!

Yeah I think that's fair. You also needed the 6 button controller for the Genesis to really play fighting games, which I'd guess most people did not have.
LttP is Action/Adventure. Have we talked about that genre yet?
yeah this is one of those places where our genre classifications get a big wonky. there's no real comparison for LttP or Super Metroid, and there's not a quality comparable game for Shinobi III or Gunstar Heroes.

I'm probably being pretty generous for the Genesis there. I suppose RPGs really are one sided whether you count Japan releases or not. It just gets even more lopsided once you add Japan stuff.

mostly a cutoff line thing (though I didn't count All-Stars because it's a port). I didn't count Vectorman 1 and 2 or Dynamite Headdy either!
also I'm not sure where it fits but Comix Zone is worth mentioning also!
