some of these are fascinating, especially the old ones. Edge is notorious for being a tough grader, where a 7/10 actually means it's a good game and a 9/10 means it's an all-time game.

scroll to the last page if you want to see some really crazy stuff. here's some examples

Doom

As it is, once the power of Doom's graphics has worn off (they're amazing, so give that at least a week or two), you’lI be longing for something new in this game.

lf only you could talk to these creatures, then perhaps you could try and make friends with them, form alliances... Now, that would be interesting. [7]

Super Metroid

In fact persistence pays off rather too well, because despite the game's size a moderately resolute player will be able to finish Super Metroid in around 12 hours game time. And the three 'save game' settings thoughtfully provided by Nintendo certainly don't help in this respect. At 24 Mbits, the cartridge may be one of the biggest ever on the SNES, but your premature arrival at the game’s conclusion makes you wonder where all those megabits went to.

Super Metroid will take your emotions on a rollercoaster ride of joy and pain: one moment you'll be throwing your head back in sheer ecstasy after defeating a boss in a battle of heroic proportions; the next minute you'll yourself furiously stabbing the reset button in complete frustration. Those who enjoyed the game will therefore have no complaints about the action, but many people will the SNES title's distinct lack of longevity a bit of a let -down. [8]

Chrono Trigger

In comparison, though, Chrono Trigger is more lightweight than Final Fantasy in almost every department. And the graphics (with characters by another Japanese superstar, Akira (Dragon Ball) Toriyama) ultimately lack the grandeur of Final Fantasy.

But for SNES owners bitten by the RPG bug, Chrono Trigger is a welcome oasis in the barren wasteland of translated Japanese RPGs. With Square producing games on Nintendo’s 16bit machine thick and fast, owners can still feel justifiably smug in the face of next generation competition. [7]

SF 3rd Strike

Lamentably, even the most devout aficionado would agree that little has changed between chapters, save minor tweaks to the fighting system. While there are new characters to give the illusion of progress, many will find themselves returning to the undeniable balance of Ryu, Ken or Gouki when engaging in multiplayer bouts. In light of such token modifications, it will be down to the series’ familiar formula to secure its success, all other elements ultimately rendered cosmetic distraction. At heart, Street Fighter III 3rd Strike is Street Fighter by any other name, and despite its self-defined constraints, this alone will be the measure of its worth. [6]

Yes, Doom is a game where you could fantasize about living in that world, but Chrono Trigger is "lightweight".

didn't just about everyone?

hmm, yep.

Did you just completely miss the part where these guys are supposed to be "strict graders"?

hmm, yep.

I've read plenty of their reviews in years past. They're pretty good. But any credibility they could have had is sort of undermined when the legendary FFTA is beating out games like DooM and Chrono Trigger.

If you loved X-Wing and feel the need for more of the same, TIE is a worthwhile addition to your software collection. But although was a superb game two years ago which can still hold its wings high today, the technically better TIE is nowhere near as enjoyable in the long term and offers nothing to support LucasArts' claim that it's a completely original game. A sequel too far, perhaps?

XD what is this ****

X-Wing better than TIE Fighter are you ****ting me

I'm skimming through some of their old reviews, and these guys have some... interesting opinions:

-Secret of Mana > Link to the Past
-In DooM, the main enemies you fight are "green lizards"
-DooM would be improved by "making alliances" with the monsters
-The aesthetics of Symphony of the Night feature "odd disparities in quality"
-Super Mario Sunshine is the "second-best platform game of all time"
-Final Fantasy Tactics Advance > Morrowind

Though I'm tempted to forgive them for everything since they gave SM64 a 10.

Except that's how it actually should be.
