I did this last year. There's no user participation involved. I just do it for the fun of it.
I pit the AI against each other to see who the best racer is. Because there are 8 racers, and 16 courses, it rounds out to an even number where I play as each character twice. Results are scored individually for each race, and add up in the end. The point is to score the lowest amount of points after all 16 courses are finished.
Last years results:
The "---" means that I was playing as that character for that course, and thus they scored a "0". Basically, everyone participates in 14 of the 16 courses, because I have to be someone.
Starting pane:
Where I play as the characters was randomized. I'll update the scoreboard after every race. My character in no way affects the other seven racers - I move to the side and idle while the race plays out. No bias. I probably won't finish this tonight, but I felt like getting it started. I also did this with SSB and Advance Wars, though I don't have those saved (new laptop).
Oh yeah, and I also did a HUGE AI tournament with every team (global) from the FIFA World Cup game. That thing took me forever. Portugal beat Spain in the finals (Australia beat the Netherlands in the 3rd place match).
The Grand Prix is always set to 150cc. I do not continue with the same Grand Prix for every course. I'm aware that usually one racer is uber for each Prix, which is why I reset the Prix after every race.

Big fight for first this course. Last place was cemented about midway through. Everything else was an open forum. Yoshi, for example, was at one point as high as third. Mario remains fairly in the middle of everything.
Five different winners in five courses. Good variety! Bowser almost stole this one. He crashed at the last second. Yoshi once again was all over the place. Last place never changed all race, and was hardly a question.
No, I mean I have to go through the entire Prix to get to Mario Raceway. I reset after every course, so the last one takes the longest to reach, while the first one is right there.
Anyway!
Mario Raceway results:
First back-to-back winner! The last three spots were all seconds apart.
Now that we're halfway through, is it safe to call a Mario win? Outside of MMF, he's kicking butt. I have to believe he'll drop off a little at some point. I mean, he's got an immunity coming up. Toad won last year with 44 points. If Mario replicates this, he'll be sitting pretty with 38. Possible? Or maybe his brother will make a come back.

And yeah, to get to any race that's not the first, I have to first play through all of the ones before them, and place in it at least 4th (otherwise I'm forced to retry or quit). This doesn't affect the results because I don't count the results when I'm just trying to get through.
For example, it goes watch [Luigi Raceway] - tally results. Play through [Luigi Raceway] - get at least 4th. Watch [Moo Moo Farm] - tally results. Play through [Luigi Raceway] - get at least 4th. Play through [Moo Moo Farm] - get at least 4th. Watch [Koopa Beach] - tally results.
And then it's even longer for the last one. So I get to play the game and watch it!
I would like to add that you should totally do a Mirror Mode tourney after this.

I mean can't it affect standings? I remember in Super Mario Kart, the order of the racers are affected by what place in the standings they are. You could, say, attack 1st in order Bowser until he's last, and then sneak into 4th. If Bowser didn't catch up, he would be last for the rest of the 4 races.
I know Mario kart 64 isn't exactly like that but I assumed that if Mario was last, the rest of the races he would be with the lower end of the racers. Is it not like that?

Nope. The game has two really good racers and they are good regardless of the results of the race. I remember getting the best racers to come in 7th and 8th in Wario Stadium by using a lightning bolt before the jump and they were back on top for the next race.
I assume it's the same for the lower racers as well.

BOP Results: http://charmander6000.webs.com/GotD%20BOP.xls Congratulations to Black Turtle for winning the guru contest.
First place was uncontested. Our first triple winner! Mario went from last place, to second place, to tripping at the finish line. Wario tripped also, giving Peach a better standing.
