I don't think in this age that I could do it for any sum.

That isn't strickly true, as with enough money you could buy connections that would get you anything you need from others (who could use the internet). Hell, you could pay someone to use the internet for you when you need it.

Even so, the internet is such a prominent feature of our lives that it would be pretty hard to forgo it completely.

So are you trying to get us to go "Thanks capitalism!"?

Because the entire premise of the argument the video is making only works if you pre-suppose that capitalism exists.

In a fully communist society there would be no high development costs that would need to be recouped by exploiting the rich.

Rest of my life? Yeesh, 1 million doesn't even get you a good retirement these days. ~20 million to "hell no" depending on the definition of usage.

As for the video, counterpoint: How much would you need to be paid to stop using roads or sidewalks? I'd suspect in 10-20 years the internet will be critical infrastructure on the level of roads. I don't want to be a 40-year old and suddenly be completely unable to shop, get information, or basically do anything at all.

Similarly for roads, you'd place a high value because damn, I dunno what you can do without roads. Sit in a retirement home, pretty much? Or does that count as using roads by proxy? In which case, you're just plain hosed unless you're going to be an Buddhist ascetic or somesuch. Hence, roads are public property. They're valuable to everyone, no one can deny that this is the case, so everyone pays for them.

The operative part of my post is "over the next 70 years."

If something CAN be shifted to an online model, it will be. It starts with things like newspapers and music, and by the time we're old men it will be impossible to get around without the information provided by it.

There will be no more Yellow Books. Phone communication will eventually shift to an internet-based model instead of cellular (lol landlines). Television, including all news, will eventually shift to an entirely online model. Video games will require communication from online services to even function (some already do, as the PSN outage taught us). I could go on.

You could probably get away with living comfortably for the next 10-20 years without it. But beyond that, you may as well be a hermit.

But to answer the question, rest of my life? Couldn't pay me enough. Not just for goofing off on message boards(and, I assume, online multiplayer), but research for school and my job requirements? I've learned so much from the Internet, I can safely say I would be worse off without it in my life. It is an invaluable tool, in every sense of the word.

Those credit card machines are connected to the internet, right? To verify whether or not your card is valid? Looks like you're gonna have to use cash for the rest of your life, for everything.

Which means you're gonna have to only do banking during banking hours because the ATM is (presumably) connected to the internet as well.

Just an example of the nuisances an internet-free existence at this point would cause.

But you do realize that said value only exists BECAUSE the internet is cheap enough that everyone can use it.

If internet access cost $4000 like Gordon Gekko's cell phone, it would be practically worthless because no one would communicate using it and no company (except maybe NetJets or something) would even bother setting up any online services. And Gordon Gekko's phone still gave him mobile telephone service at least despite being expensive--making the internet expensive would necessarily decrease its value and cripple its functionality beyond all repair or worth.

It's not even a case of "thank the early adopters for making it cheaper for everyone" because internet access, once it was made available to the public, was never obscenely expensive as far as I know.

I would have to be enough money that I would never have to work anymore, I assume tax-free, would have to be more than one million dollars..I still have to say no. I use the internet for socializing(or planing for meetings/events for socializing), I use it to, uh, "acquire" a lot of products of my hobbies(which I doubt the money would cover, for as long as I'm interested in those hobbies), I use it to get news not just on said hobbies but for the world at large(I rarely watch cable TV anymore, I just don't find the need), I use it for online gaming which would be awful to give up forever, I feel gaming(and more of my hobbies, every year) are going to be increasingly internet-involved/digital distribution and I wouldn't have access to that, I regularly read and learn about sorts of things on the Internet that has helped me in life...

...and hey! No more Board 8! Perhaps the most important of all :p

So no, I can't see myself ever giving up the Internet. Its too vital to too many facets of my life.

Right. The price hasn't changed dramatically, but the value has increased exponentially. I've made this very argument in a number of ISP-bashing topics. That most of us pay roughly the same as we did 10 years ago, but we get probably ten times the value out of it now as compared to then.

The point is that this is value that was created by innovation and entrepreneurship. Things that don't really exist under Communism. All of the things that MAKE the Internet vital were created for one purpose only, to make profit. And they were created by private companies, not by government agencies.

And actually my last post brings up a good point about the video.

They frame it around this provocative question about how much the internet is worth to you, but then the entire video is spent talking about how CELL PHONES became cheap and widespread due to the free market, with no relevance to the internet's growth at all, to ultimately make their point about capitalism.

The question about the value of the internet, while fascinating, is completely irrelevant to the rest of the video. I think they knew they couldn't just make it all about cell phones, because cell phones are in fact less valuable to people than the internet, and many people (myself included) would gladly take a hefty amount of money to toss ours in the trash forever.

It's the propaganda video equivalent of: "SEX! Now that I have your attention, vote for Bart!"

That's not really true. Cell phones are just another example besides the Internet to use, that's all.

To an extent you're right, they open with the Internet because that's the greatest "shock value" proposition, so to speak. They move on to cell phones because that's an easier example to relate as they've had a longer commercial life-cycle I suppose.

In any case, the same logic applies equally to both examples. The Internet is a better example of "capitalism giving you what you want for much less than it's really worth to you" and cell phones are a better example of "today's kids have things that the richest 1% couldn't have as recent as 10 years ago"

No, not at all. We established that a lot of what makes the Internet fun is not created by ISPs and is free to access, but "free to access" does NOT mean "no profit"

Look at all the cool **** Google gives us for free. And yet, they somehow still rake in the millions (billions? I don't really know, someone look at an income statement for me!)
