It's really not the same. I really enjoyed both, but comparing them is difficult. It's still got RPG elements, but it's a sidescroller instead of a stand still RPG. You have a party, but you control each character one at a time instead of having a partner. I'd say TTYD is a superior game, but SPM is still very fun. However, your opinion of TTYD probably won't have much impact on your opinion of SPM.
Super Paper Mario is pretty good - like, a 7.5/10 or so. It starts off pretty weak and the ending sucks, but everything in the middle is generally quite good. I think it's about on par with The Thousand-Year Door, though both are noticeably inferior to the original PM.

I don't care if you think the original is the best by far or anything, but TTYD on the same as SPM? I draw the line!
But it is fun and worth playing if you're a fan (or even not!).
