Jesus I can't say enough about how much I love Party of One. I just rewatched the whole series a couple of days ago (which is why I have so much to say about it), and where Owl's Well had me kind of paying attention to something else half the time, Po1 had me giggling like an idiot the whole time. Just about every joke is funny, the art direction is inspired (especially the scene where Pinkie goes nuts, and that one bit with Pinkie and Applejack where there's like 20 reaction images in 10 seconds), and it has Gummy on top of everything. Gummy is the best side character.
Also that Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy scene is like the funniest scene in the show that nobody ever talks about.
But really, I've said before Pinkie needed development as a character, and this is the episode pinkie needed as a character. It wasn't the "pinkie will be proven wrong." type of episode, this episode showed that pinkie has weaknesses too. She has problems, and isn't just some wacky monkey cheese random character.I'm not gonna try to psychoanalyze a cartoon pony, but her behavior actually seems completely consistent with someone growing up as an unhappy and lonely child (fine, filly) and carrying around the unhappy memories with them into adulthood. Look at how frantically she tries to make everyone around her happy, how she always tries to surround herself with friends and laughter and proof that people like her. At the beginning of the ep, she just can't stop asking people if they're having fun.
And then, when there's the slightest hint of rejection, the merest suggestion that maybe she's going to be friendless again, and she deflates like a... well, balloon, and turns, again, into the damaged and emotionally neglected little Diane. And what's the first thing she does? Makes up a bunch of imaginary friends for herself. And call me crazy, but considering one of her friends is a pile of rocks, I get the feeling this isn't the first time she's met these "friends." I think they helped her cope with her miserable childhood.
Woah that sure was a lot of words about a magical pink pony
The thing is, how can you make fun of this fanbase? What are you going to do, go "Ha ha, you watch a show for little girls"? The appropriate response is "damn straight!" Besides, ponies are quickly approaching critical mass, and even once things finally do die down, the show will return in December to rile us all back up.
I dunno. Some fans are more easily riled up than others. Most don't really care though. I think it's because we all know that we were skeptics at one point, so we get it. I say there's only two kinds of people: people who like ponies and people who don't know they like ponies yet.
And because I guess I like analyzing things meant for kids, let's look at ponyciety.
Ponies are given their goal in life at a very young age, and it all has a hint of fatalism to it, with the illusion of free will. As we've seen with other young ponies in the series, they are referred to as "pure potential", but ultimately, this isn't true. They're all good at one thing and, as far as we know, this thing is set from birth, whether the pony realizes it or not. (See: Sweetie Belle and her singing, Scootaloo on her scooter, etc.)
A big part of getting your very own buttstamp is living up to it, something we've seen just about everybody worry about, Such as Applejack stressing about not working hard enough for her family and overworking herself, or Rainbow Dash having a breakdown about not being able to pull off another Rainboom: the thing that gave her her own iconic mark.
Let's hope there isn't such a thing as a pony mid-life crisis, or things could turn bad fast, as far as we know, cutie marks can't change, and they would have to wear it with shame, not unlike Hester Prynne wearing the scarlet letter. Because of this looming presence of unhappiness with themselves, ponies are encouraged by their society to be happy with what they do, and if they don't, they assume something is wrong with themselves specifically, and try to correct the problem the best way they know how, (Oui Madame!!!! *twitch*) and not to question how their life is governed.
Celestia's got to have some hella good PR too, absolutely nobody doubts her. Or is it just because if anyone feels they did, or if they feel that they disrespect her in any way, they would be immediately banished to wherever ponies get banished to. Twilight is close to the princess, and her constant worry of banishment implies that it's happened before, and not just to Luna.
The entire thing seems oddly utopian, perhaps to a fault.
I hate long car rides to New Hampshire because I have nothing better to do than do this.
There's some overthinking going on there. Scootaloo may like to sing and be terrible at it, but I think it's more about her desire to be the center of attention than wanting to be a singer. All three of the CMC have something they're good at, but they second-guess themselves because they want to be absolutely sure it's what they want to do in life (something I can fully empathize with).
Also, I highly doubt Celestia's an evil tyrant. Twilight's just eager to please and lets her imagination get the best of her. I fully support Trollestia, though. Immortals have to keep themselves amused somehow.
My favorite part of Po1 was when Pinkie reverted from crazy sad Pinkie into regular crazy happy Pinkie. The transition from happy Pinkie to sad Pinkie was so smooth and natural, you didn't even question it. Even when her hair "popped" and went straight and she went crazy with the eyes, it all seemed like a natural progression of her psyche. You don't even think about how much Pinkie changed from her usual self. But then she pops from sad Pinkie into happy Pinkie and it's such a jarring transition, it makes you realize how much flawless character development the writers stuffed into less than 20 minutes for Pinkie. Simply astounding.

Good list! I'd probably put the Griffon episode at the bottom and raise the "Mare in the Moon" duo, if only for the awesome Gurren Lagann remix they produced.

^Yep, that's the one! And you know, if you're hoping to make some epic battle sequence, it might be best to wait until S2 gets underway so you have more material to work with.

Yeah was thinking that. Also gotta learn that masking (like getting a pony moving in another screen etc)
Every time I try "masking" it makes them fade or some ****
