313. Lock's Quest – DS

This past Christmas, my mom wanted to get my dad a new DSiXL so he wouldn't have to strain his eyes to play handheld games anymore. She found out that Wal-Mart was having a sale of them for $200, and you could pick 2 games to go with it from a list. There was a Tiger Woods game on it, so that would be one, but then all of the other games looked absolutely horrid. But then I remembered, a long time ago, I was actually looking into Lock's Quest, because EGM had given it an 8.5 or something. I told her that if she got that, I would definitely at least play it, so it would, at worst, still be a better choice than anything else on that list. So she did.

I was spending my Christmas break at my parents' house, and didn't have any of my fancy next-gen systems with me, so I spent the next few days playing Lock's Quest on my (surprise!) very own brand new DSiXL. It's actually pretty fun. The main concept is that you have a gift of being able to build fortresses in no time flat, when there just so happens to be a war brewing between humans and a race of machines. You enlist in the army, and have to build up all these walls with different turrets and mines, and all kinds of crazy tower-defense weapons to either protect people or "source wells" that you use to build more walls to repel the invading forces. Meanwhile, you can still run around the battlefield and wail on stuff with your hands, which is a lot more helpful than it sounds. The more things you hit, the more your little special meter goes up. When it's past halfway full, you can unleash a special move of your choice, like damaging everything on screen, giving all of your walls a temporary health boost, giving your turrets a quick upgrade in their range, etc.

The game gets a lot more complicated than I expected. From the box and opening cutscenes, I really thought this game was targeted toward kids, but that's definitely not the case once you reach the later levels. If you don't want to be majorly spoiled on the plot you should probably stop reading now.

Yeah, seriously, stop.

After a while, you learn that you and your sister are actually both machines that were resurrected by the guy who made all the other machines that are attacking the humans from some guy he worked with back in the day, who just so happens to be the guy you grew up knowing as your father, and the main guy has to decide whether he wants to join him or keep fighting with the humans. Except not really, because the humans spy on your meeting with your "father" so they attack you anyway, regardless, so you're forced to join him. At the end, your sister gets killed, so you have to save your father from the humans so he can rebuild her, and then the two of you go live happily ever after in the rural town you grew up in.

Yeah, it definitely gets a lot more complicated in the later levels. Unfortunately, due to the game's nature, I didn't even really care too much about the plot, because I just wanted to kill some more dudes with turrets. I skipped a lot of what I could, so I wouldn't forget the best set-ups to use. It's a pretty neat game, but I don't think I'll ever be playing it again.

312. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance - PS2

*WARNING: HUGE SPOILERS INBOUND, INCLUDING A FEW THAT RELATE TO THE WHOLE SERIES*

Whenever I list MGS rankings, it's really hard to list enough >'s to go before this game. The fact that it's STILL made it this long before being ranked should tell you how highly I think of the series as a whole. In fact, I still think quite highly of this game in many regards.

Many people find Raiden to be a terrible protagonist. I do not. I find Raiden to be a great lead character, especially once you find that you're really just playing second fiddle to Snake and Otacon. I'd always kinda wanted to see how people viewed Snake from an outside perspective, and it's really cool to me to see how he operates when you're not controlling him. There's a little baggage there with Rose, who sucks and is a waste of time, but I'll give Kojima some leeway, as it was necessary to make Raiden's character who he was supposed to be. In fact, I enjoy Raiden much more in this game than I do in MGS4. Yeah, I said it.

The gameplay is a huge step up from MGS1, as shown from how ungodly easy Twin Snakes was. First-person is a huge help, and some very nice touches were added to build just a really fun game.

But let's get into why I don't like MGS2 nearly as much as the other 3, and it's the main reason most people like the MGS games so much: the story. On its own, I would think MGS2 is a ****ing masterpiece, but when you realize this came right after MGS1, it's almost a kick in the balls to fans of the first game. The entire time I played MGS2, I couldn't help but think to myself, "You know, it really feels like I've done all this before." It felt like that to me the entire first 2/3 of the game or so. There's even another god damn cyborg ninja. How obvious did it need to be, Kojima?

But then we get to the part with Emma Emmerich. You know the part. Finally, I felt like I was playing something new, something worth my time. All of a sudden, I felt more strongly about this game than I ever had about the first. For the third time in my life, I found myself crying because of a video game. Finally, I had been given a reason to continue. Then I got captured. The very next instant, the gameplay had taken another wild turn, and yet again, I was in a situation where I was absolutely hooked. Crazy colonel was pushing me so hard and making me laugh so badly I couldn't put the controller down. I think I'll say right now that this section remains as the most absurd hour or so of gaming in my entire life. And I ****ing loved it. I knew Kojima was setting up for something grand, and I had to know what it was ASAP.

Then Ocelot showed up. I was ****ing ecstatic. All my work was coming to a culmination of events of which I could have only dreamed. And then he started explaining this game's purpose. This was all a test to see whether the events of the first game could be replicated and executed as well as before. I was a pawn the whole time. Suddenly, everything made sense. And I wished it didn't. Not only was Raiden played by Ocelot, but I had been played by Kojima. At that moment, I realized the man had made me play through the exact same ****ing game twice. Then to make it its own commodity, he slapped a unique final few hours on it and called it MGS2. I couldn't believe what had just happened to me. I couldn't believe what I had just gone through. I couldn't believe my reward for reaching the end.

I just have to say, I'm extremely lucky I played this game third, or who knows if I'd have even tried some of my favorite games of all-time....

311. Wave Race – GB

I played this game a ton when I was a kid. The concept was extremely simple. Race other jet-skis from a top-down perspective around some buoys. As has been established almost too much already, I sucked ass at games when I was younger, and this was a concept I could very easily grasp. As a plus, it got me into the series when it hit 3D on the N64, a very nice bonus.

310. Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale - PC

I'd heard tons of good things about this game from all over B8, but I looked into it myself, and it really didn't seem like my kind of game. I'm not one to pass on a game because of a cute or anime style, but this was a little too cute/anime for even me. Then last year right after Christmas, all the insane deals hit Steam with this becoming $5. I didn't have much to lose at that point.

I'm glad I bought it. I'm not a big fan of the dungeon crawling, but selling **** in the shop never gets old for me. I have every customer's tendencies down pat these days, and making tons of money is no problem anymore. I still haven't gone through all the challenge modes, but I'm sure I'll get to them some day.

309. Mystic Heroes - GCN

When my group of friends was into Dynasty Warriors back in the day, we ran into problems with the PS2 only supporting 2 players. We'd constantly have to be switching back and forth to get everybody in. With Mystic Heroes on Gamecube, that was no longer a thorn in our sides! With some new spells, traps, and bosses, it was a really neat game to me. I think my friends were more into the Chinese lore and cool-looking characters and less into the better gameplay, though, so unfortunately, we hardly ever got to play more than 2 players at a time. Which is a shame, because I kinda liked this better back then. Instead, I was forced to push through most of the game solo, which was an extremely tall task that I could never quite pull off.

I remember getting stuck at some stage where I had to wade through a stage filled with fog at some kind of temple, because there were tons and tons of enemies being sent after me, and I'd keep getting lost, so I'd have to fight hundreds before I found where I was going. Something like that.

Eh, none of these are terribly memorable to me, so commence short write-ups!

308. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 - PS2
I was pretty excited for this after 2006, as the GM mode sounded pretty awesome. Turns out the storyline changes actually made it more monotonous to play through, and just took up time, and story mode sucked. Oh well.

307. Final Fantasy X-2 - PS2

Believe it or not, this will only be the first of two Final Fantasy games on this entire list (take a wild guess what the other one is). As I've stated before, I'm not nearly as proficient at thinking in real-time as I am at coming up with strategies, so I wasn't as excited for this battle system's as I was for the other one. The characters in this game gave me no reason whatsoever to follow the plot, other than seeing what happened to Spira after I had last been there, which I have to say, was still pretty cool. Neat concept, terrible execution.

306. Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones - GBA

After playing the original Fire Emblem (or FE7 for you japanophiles), I was ready to buy whatever they had to throw on shelves. I didn't know if I was just tired of the series from playing the first one so many times, or whether the characters just didn't grip me as much, but I just couldn't even make it through the whole game. Well, then Path of Radiance came out, and it was pretty clear it was the latter.

305. Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires - 360

I've always liked the Empires games most of the whole DW series. It gave me tons more to do besides just the usual story **** they always pack into them. 6 was by far the worst I've played, though (out of the whole 2), and was entirely outclassed by DW7 that I bought only a few months later. Still, it's a DW game, and it was still fun for a while, as they all are.

304. SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals: Combined Assault - PS2

As I've said before, I was a huge SOCOM fan back in the PS2 days. This was about the only one that doesn't hit a soft-spot with me, though, because it was basically just a repackaging with some new maps in it, paving the way for maps to become DLC in the future. It was still fun, just not much was new.

303. Need for Speed Underground - GCN

This was the first underground street-racing game I had played, and it was pretty good. It had some various mode, drag racing, drift racing, and good ol' regular racing. The third option was the most fun, mainly because it was the only one with multiple vehicles going at a time, and had the most variety. The customization was simple, but it worked, and the racing mechanics were as I'd expected from NFS. All in all, a satisfying racing game.

302. Fable II - 360

It's probably weird to some that this is my least favorite Fable, but I stand behind this 100%. It was the least inspired, most boring, and most pitiful attempt at a solid game in the series. Even though the first Fable aspired to break the genre and ultimately failed, it was still a very fun game that brought some new mechanics to the table. Fable II was going to then be that game, but it just made things worse. The combat was way too simplified, the dog was a needless addition, the story was stupid, and oh my god, the final "boss", if anyone can even call it that. The disappointment that the first game was to everyone else, was what the second game was for me. Blech.

301. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II - PS2

Does my write-up for BG1 still exist in this topic? If so, just check it out, because it's the same thing here! Except I think I played this one for more. The fact that I still actually have my copy of this suggests so anyway!

300. Planet Puzzle League – DS
I am a really big fan of the formula that Tetris Attack has started way back when, but only so many games can recreate the magic. Pokemon Puzzle League and Challenge were great fun to play at home and on the road, respectfully, but I can't say I ever felt like a new version was necessary. Cue Planet Puzzle League. Yeah ****ing right I'm gonna skip a title in such an established line of games!

What can I say? It's more Puzzle League fun. Just...... not quite as fun. Using the stylus to move blocks up and down make things a lot easier, allowing for easier, bigger chains. However, I never felt compelled to keep playing. I like knowing exactly what my opponent is dealing with, in terms of their blocks, which only show up as a shadow. Speaking of which, the CPU's in the game aren't nearly as tough as those found in Pokemon Puzzle League, for sure, which made for some pretty one-sided battles. On top of that, there were simply different levels, and you were told that each one is supposed to be harder, with no real progression. You blow through 10 rounds and you win each level of difficulty! Needless to say, that got old pretty fast.

Call me old-fashioned, but I'll stick with hearing my YOU'RE WASTING MY TIME's and CL-L-L-L-LOYSTER's and I'M GONNA WIN's any day. It may annoy others, but I think it adds a sense of accomplishment to what I'm doing, which I think is Planet Puzzle League's main problem.

Hey, so since this was 300th, Using my hint, guess which one of those other choices is going to get the highest place!

299. WWE Day of Reckoning 2 - GCN

The sequel was better than the original in a few ways. First, it had a neat varied submission mechanic. Second, it introduced stamina, which kept people from wildly swinging their arms all the time. Also, I remember really liking the story mode. The major players in the whole thing were HHH, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton, and Edge, which is a pretty top-notch cast. Also, there was a love interest with Stacy Kiebler, and that never hurts.

298. FIFA Soccer 64 - N64

I seriously don't remember a thing about this game, except that it had no deterrent from standing in front of the goalie, so he'd just kick the ball off your forehead and into his own goal. I got pretty good at making that happen.

297. Super Dodge Ball Advance - GBA

296. Dragon Age: Origins - 360

I've been pretty squarely in Bioware's camp for years now, but this is one of those few hiccups of theirs that kinda turned me off. It has so much in common with Mass Effect that you wouldn't think it could be too bad, but it somehow gets pretty close, and I think I know why. I've noticed a trend for me. Guns will vastly improve a game in my book. It seems really shallow, but for some reason, that statement proves true again and again. I just couldn't deal with Dragon Age after being spoiled so much by Mass Effect. The combat was worse, the characters were worse (except Alistair, who just so happens to be the god damn man), the dialogue options were....... close, but still a bit worse. About the only thing it did better was its pacing, but that wasn't enough for me to continue through to the end. I did make it decently far, just not all the way.

295. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening - PS2

Thought this was coming later, didn't ya? I know I said I've beaten it, but that was really just so I could say I've beaten a DMC game. In retrospect, I really wish that was a different one, because this one was ****ing impossible. Holy ****, I probably sunk more hours into this game than I have a multitude of RPG's! Once it was finally over, I was ready to put it away and never touch it again. -__-

294. Tony Hawk's Underground - GCN

Many will say that this was when the Tony Hawk series started its trek downhill, and I have to agree with that. There were a lot of things that I didn't mind about it. The addition of a story in a skateboarding game seems weird, but I kinda liked it. The levels weren't quite as over-the-top at first glance, but once you got in there and did some tricks, you'd find some ridiculous lines, so that wasn't bad, either. Also, if I'm getting my games straight, I believe this was the first one that let you get off your skateboard. At times, it was extremely helpful in bringing you to places you couldn't normally reach, and do some lines that would be otherwise off-limits. However, the game would force you to walk to areas way too much, and it killed the fast pace that former TH games would strive on. Overall, it wasn't a bad game, but it was becoming more and more clear that they were running out of ideas to enhance the formula already in place.
