Chased the algorithm too hard. All the fun videos went away in exchange for a near constant stream of videos about how bad the industry is. It got stale fast, and you can only hear so many versions of the same content before it just stops being worth checking in.

People get tired of content when it's the same thing every time. "Person bitches about things they don't like" can only go so far. I know I personally am not interested in watching something so negative all the time

I haven't watched in years but I got tired of being preached at about the same things every week.

I think at one point about 12 oout of 15 videos in a row were about "Crunch is bad. I'm not proposing to do anything about it, I just want you guys that already agree with me to still know that it is bad."

Which isn't wrong but it's also not informative or entertaining, just depressing.

I fell off in recent months when every video had the most unbelievably BAD parody song from the editor. I was okay with the repetitive videos and the extremely opinionated opinions, but the songs were killing me inside.

Every video is the same. The industry is bad and getting worse. Yeah we know.

Don't see the appeal of YouTubers that just complain about shit constantly in the first place.

there used to be more variety to her videos. now it's just microtransactions are bad, aaa devs/pubs are bad, lootboxes are bad, etc. i enjoyed it when she would shit on bad games, but maybe she's scared of another digital homicide scenario

I dipped out when I noticed they were basically posting the same video every other week.

It's the constant negativity yes. But it's also because she is trans/non-binary.

The audience that wants constant negativity on YouTube are more likely going to be conservative. The person no longer fits what that audience wants. Likewise the content is shifting due to that reaction as well turning away more people.

Maybe I'm wrong and guys like YongYea aren't as popular as well. I don't see him linked as much as before either.

This is the reason I stopped watching Karl Jobst but keep watching Summoning Salt on repeat. I can only watch the same video about Billy Mitchell being a big meany cheater cheater bad dumb man so many times before it gets old.

it all started with the AngryVideoGameNerd enjoying popularity then a lot of copycats wanted in on the accentuate the negative for entertainment genre. Some are still around, but several are long gone like the Irate Gamer.

A lot of people simply stopped watching when she came out as trans, that's sad reality. Happened with PhilosophyTube too

I was also turned off by nothing but the same complaining.

Their reviews are shit.

Because he shares a name with the best Leverage antagonist and I want him to go away so I can stop thinking people are talking about something relevant.

This kind of outrage content gets stale fast.

If you listen to one of YongYea's more recent videos, the one for the Suicide Squad DLC pack, even he's tired of making this kind of stale content. You can hear it in the half-hearted delivery.

AVGN was playing a character who only went after specific games, James Rolfe was actually very positive. You can't blame him for people deciding that every popular game that came out should be treated like LJN NES games.

There's a difference between "angry" gamers who pretend to act like that for laughs, and the ones who are clearly genuinely pissy.

Sterling is more in line with someone like Adam Sessler.

What's wild is that I only got into PhilosphyTube within the last few months. Didn't even know she was trans until like halfway through the first video I watched when she said it.

I dropped them for the same reason I dropped a lot of doom poster content creators like Yong Yea, because I'm sick of negativity and I hate that the algorithm rewards those kind of content. It was my guilty pleasure when I was younger and edgier, but now I'm getting older and I hear enough negativity in the world that I don't need anymore of it in my life. I am, however, a big sucker for content creators who make videos on internet cultures and memes, though I do dislike the pivot towards lolcow documentary type of videos on some of them.

And people wonder why I pushback on all the negativity around here.

So it's a lot more understandable. If Karl didn't have a successful Pateron, his life would have been destroyed. Lawsuits are expensive.

Agreed. I remember when I was getting into speedrunning videos I thought it was super juicy and interesting. Unfortunately outside of the occasional cheater in a game I care about, it just isn't engaging.

"This person spliced/peeked/hacked X game to get Y time" and that's the whole video. I don't really care about the reasoning, I just care they stopped. Which, clearly, they did.

SS stays King because I can feel his passion for Speedrun Communities in every video.

Pretty much this-- I stopped watching Sterling many years ago as even though I generally agreed with his point of view about stuff, the same angry rant week after week eventually just bored me.

Oh, absolutely! And I don't blame him for doing it. It gets clicks, and homie needs to eat. I don't mind him doing it, I just think it isn't interesting. I didn't even mind when he took a sponsorship during the Completionist stuff. I know he needs to make money, the videos just aren't my speed.

I'm still subbed to them, reality as a whole isn't really getting better so the complaint that the "negativity is too great" strikes me as people thinking the gaming industry never getting better is some isolated situation & not the world as it stands. Welcome to 2024 I guess.

Their content is still decently funny & supporting good trans/NB creators is still important, especially with how Anti-LGBT the US is as a whole. They're in the UK now, but we know TERF Island or thereabouts ain't much better.

Just because content is negative doesn't mean you let it affect your overall mental health either

Karl is the "law and order SVU" to SS's "forensic files." Karl is too into the drama whereas SS is all about analysis. It's like comparing TMZ to Wikipedia.

From the looks of it, Jimquisition hasnt really fallen off that much. Used to average 200k views 3 years ago, now about 100k. Only lost half

It probably doesn't help that YongYea himself has now experienced the other side of it when people didn't like his Kiryu voice acting in Yakuza. That kinda felt like a bit of a karma moment for him.

And no, the world isn't constantly getting worse, but it isn't going to move in a positive direction in all areas every day, so it's very easy to make it seem like it's getting perpetually worse if you ignore positive changes and hyperfocus on negative ones. Which is what content like Sterling's does.

That's such an abjectly weird quote that isn't in anyway paraphrased from what I said you might as well have just made it up. I'm not going to sit here & make an entire list of all the negative shit happening every single day, but most people realize that life is about finding the small things that bring enjoyment or fulfilment to your life. Not all of Sterling's videos are this "doom & gloom" parade that people pretend they are & as an avid viewer, I can immediately tell at a glance that the people complaining about the style don't watch them actively.

They don't like having to talk about negative occurrences all the time because they realize how demoralizing that is, but they do it because talking about these situations often is how you understand what's happening, & then how you can improve it. Women are still clawing back their freedom for abortion & bodily autonomy in the states, & yet we still have negative topics talking about when the GOP does some new insane shit that affects women & couples.

No one ever goes into those threads & says "wow this is just too much negativity for me, imma have to unsub from this timeline & dip." No, people that care about the problems stay engaged & up to date on what's going on, no matter how dour it might get. That's how the human condition works lol.

If people don't have the mental headspace to keep up with something every single day I get it. But if people actually in anyway care about an issue whatever it is, you will stay informed & up to date about it. Whether it's abusive gaming industry practices, women's rights or civil rights, or otherwise. I would argue the world is getting worse by a small % day after day given climate change & we're just waiting for the end, but that's just my pessimistic view on things. Maybe some technology or mass human campaign will bail us out, but that's a conversation for another topic
