I'm a few hours in and all of the characters are just so dull

I asked this to myself looked at story opinions and yeah apparently it does one thing unexpected idk but the writing still says dull

Not really, the main characters are self inserts surprisingly. Everything comes from the supporting cast.

Not really. It's a pretty bland experience that has a fantastic art style and some decent music.

I got pretty far in but ultimately didn't finish it. Didn't care at all about the main characters so I didn't care to see the end of the plot. Also character progression is really boring, you don't feel much more powerful at the end of the game than you do at the beginning because you only have a very small selection of abilities to use.

The two main characters don't change at all. They're just as boring at the end of the game as they are at the start, so no luck there. The supporting cast helps out a ton but no-one is particularly well written or anything.

Nah it really doesnt. At least, it didnt for me. The game looks and sounds good, but thats about it. The actual gameplay, characters, and writing were all so boring

I didn't make it far (Cursed Woods), but it wasn't very interesting, and had some weird linear pacing I couldn't put my finger on. Some of the dungeon design were cool though.

That's a shame. The presentation is incredible but yeah even the combat feels lacking.

Same thing happened to me. Game is nice, but it prides itself too much on being old school and keeping the basic story telling from that era

I beat the game but the combat is the same boring stuff over and over through the game. It was a big dissappointment after the previous game The Messenger.

I think so. I liked the combat. The two mains are still nothing to write home about but the supporting cast is pretty good. I didnt think it was as good as The Messenger, and I would suggest playing The Messenger ASAP if you havent as that game is fantastic.

It looks gorgeous, was a spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger, and even had CT's composer. I think the hype it got was understandable.

Nostalgia for Chrono Trigger was the biggest contributor for that.

I just dropped this game after 10 hours or so a day or two ago. There is a lot to like about it, and I see why people do. The presentation really is lovely, and the exploration of each map for chests and stuff is great.

In the end, the story and combat were just too boring to keep me engaged. It is rare I dont finish a game I start, but I found myself looking at continuing like a chore, so I knew it was time to quit. Combat encounters were the main thing to deter me-they were all the same and dragged on and on.

I am glad I gave it a try and that it exists, but it did not hook me as I had hoped.

I think it's an alright throwback RPG with an phenomenal art style and soundtrack but the gameplay and writing wasn't enough to keep everyone hooked for more than 5hrs.

Idk if the main characters were written to be these stoic elemental jedi knight types but their motivations have no purpose to the player and they never evolve emotionally or anything like you'd expect in another RPG of that kind. Can't hook people with unrelateable characters like that even with gorgeous visuals and music.

The good does not outweigh the bland in this game. Tedious encounters with unsatisfying combat. The food looks really good though.

Chained Echoes by a country mile. That one is going into my replay stack.

It's funny how Chained Echoes was viewed by some as a really good holdover until Sea of Stars came out, but then it ended up not holding a candle Chained Echoes.

I played Chained Echoes when it released on gamepass and it's just so much better.

Maybe Sea of Stars wouldn't have been so bad if I didnt play Chained Echoes first.

I was extremely disappointed by how bland the characters were. This is the same team that made The Messenger, so I expected a bunch of the witty dialogue like the shopkeeper had

The combat system really made it lackluster to me. You don't get anything new and the things you do get (like ultimates) you can only use during boss battles and they're not really stronger than regular attacks so what's the point

The story is ultra tier dog shit & the characters are all archetypes or dull & uninteresting, you shouldn't have played it if you wanted a good story

i got bored with it after about 10 hours. the combat gimmicks were enough to hold my interest for a bit, but the battles dont change much and the story was not interesting enough to hold my attention any longer.

Chained Echoes was really good, amazing compared to Sea of Stars.

At this point I am just going to avoid any games that say "chrono trigger inspired". I see this phrase so often and it always just means "we are a western company making a shitty less fun copycat of chrono trigger in RPGmaker with a lot muted brown color schemes for some reason and no charm at all"

I dropped it about six hours in and it was just as dull as it started. All flash, no substance

They should have shaved down the size of the game and focused more on the combat and story/characters

It feels like it only had enough steam for about 20 hours but that's when it opens up and proceeds to do absolutely nothing new

In case anyone was curious: chained echoes is now on sale on steam. I finally bought it myself

As someone that 100%ed Chained Echoes, the game is pretty good and does get somewhat more interesting later on (I wasn't sold on the game at first either). The game isn't amazing or one of the better RPGs I played but I overall liked it.

I will say that I did like Sea of Stars more than Chained Echoes. Chained Echoes was a game that started out promising to me at first but then from the second part of the game onward took some directions both gameplay wise and story wise that didn't click with me at all.

I just think its funny how that Completionist guy hailed it as the second coming of Chrono Trigger because he was in it. And then when he got exposed the devs took him out lol
