I meant the book its based on. But I'm watching now. It's pretty good so far

I finished the first episode. It seems fine. I'll probably read the books at some point. Maybe after I finish this first season. I think its only covering the first book and season 2 probably is more than a year or 2 years away

The first book I found was a slog. Im not sure how well it will translate into a TV show. Weiss et al are probably a good choice for trying to add some mystery and intrigue to the series. At the very least it has the book to fall back on for material so theyll be less making it up as they go along ala lost.

This shit's getting so much hype. I hope it's a mega hit just because of the hype it's getting, calling it the next GOT and so on. Kinda crazy.

I read a synopsis of the series. From what I could see in the preview, is Netflix completely rewriting the story?

GOT was great up until they had to make up the later seasons due to running out of source material. The TBP books are already finished so Im hopeful that history wont be repeated.

They had plenty of material, they just refused to use it.

The first episode of the show hasn't impressed me. I'll keep watching, but I'm not sure how high my hopes are. I've yet to read the book, but still planning to get to it later this year.

The books are decent but I suspect the hype comes from the fact that it's pretty much China's first sci-fi blockbuster as sci-fi has been traditionally looked down upon in China. It still pales in comparison to Soviet sci-fi works like those of the Strugatsky Brothers.

You should check out The Wandering Earth. Its fantastic.

Edit: just realised there is a Wandering Earth 2! One to watch this weekend.

I just read the first book over the past few days since I'd been meaning to for a while and the TV series motivated me to stop procrastinating and I was not particularly thrilled. felt like I read a plot/concept outlinefor a story rather than an actual proper novel; bbasically none of the characters have any personality and things just constantly happen out of nowhere with little warning or explanation. feels like there's probably some good core idea there but as it is the book is basically nonsense

I saw some blurb for this show saying it was about 'five friends' (all young and telegenic) using their gifts to fight an existential threat.

And I thought: is there some kind of shitty YA version of the novel that they are adapting instead?

Considering what D&D did to just wrap up GoT so they could move on to Star Wars (which they didnt get because of what they did to GoT), Im good.

While I have no doubt that some of the casting decisions were to more broadly increase audience appeal, part of it was to address a genuine logistical issue arising from a first person book to a TV series. The books have quite a bit of internal monologing. This just doesn't translate to TV well. Especially if the monologing is about mathematics, physics and philosophy. Splitting the book roles to make the cast to make it bigger allows for the characters to actually talk out these ideas among each other. Which typically works a lot better than having a voice over monologs.

That said I do have issues with how they linked up the main characters of each novel and made them all friends. That just makes things feel unnecessarily small.

I just realized the Chinese version is on Amazon prime. I'll probably check it out after I finish netflix. I also plan to read the books soon.

The entire series is a concept series. It doesn't really have interesting characters. They tried to fix that with the Netflix show and it's debatable if that worked, but the main plot points are there, so I think it's fine. I personally enjoy a lot of the ideas in the trilogy but don't actually consider it well written fiction. Would be better as like the background lore to a fiction setting or something.

It's a misanthrope show so you guys would love it.

I finished it. Didn't like it much. Imo the Chinese version that's on Amazon is much better.

8 episodes isn't enough (although 32 was too many lol). I understand why they did what they did with the characters and whatnot, but they forgot to make them likeable.

how far does the Chinese version go? Does it cover about the same amount of story?

I know its longer but I heard it moves slower

Strictly the first book.

Yes, it was too long, but it was padded out. It had alot of flashbacks and whatever you call it when the last few minutes of an episode plays at the start of the next episode. 20 or 24 episodes would probably be about right.
