I see. Good to know since it means I won't need to worry about whether to check out the rest of the books. I feel like I could get 95% of the experience in 2% of the time by just reading a wiki plot summary

Maybe, but all the coolest ideas are in books 2 and 3. There are absolutely no interesting characters though. Also the sexism gets pretty blatant in the latter books. I enjoyed them for the concepts and to see what would happen. It's a divisive series.

I finished the final episode tonight. I wish netflix shows didn't take so long to return. Season 2 is probably at least 2 years away. Assuming it even happens. I'll be done with the books long before then though

Hopefully not. I was told that the show was finished in early 2023 and ready to launch, but the showrunners insisted on shooting a particular scene. Then the Hollywood strike happened and the scene wasn't shot until the end of the strike, delaying it until 2024.
