Kim confirmed the Netflix adaptation will change a major plot point of the animated series. "The [Sozin's] comet was their ticking clock," he said. "We removed that particular ticking clock from our show for now because we couldn't know exactly how old our actors would be for the subsequent seasons."

Show won't last long enough to find out

Cowardly move to let actors aging get in the way of the storytelling. This adaptation is feeling more pointless with every article that comes out about it.

So like...what makes the Fire Nation a threat in the final season? By that point, they'd have the whole world against them and no ace up their sleeve.

Why not just extend the timeline to account for actors aging and be vague about how much time is passing instead of completely removing it? Like make it in two years instead of a few months.

I mean, they were pretty good at being a threat even without the comet for team BoomerAang.

But yeah, I can see why they might choose to just... not mention the comet until they are sure they can cover it.

Ok, I guess I can understand some of the reasoning, but at this point, I have to question what they're even adapting, at the rate it's going. Seems like the simplest solution to this is to just be vague about how much time has passed over the series' production.

Totally understandable that they don't want to commit something to an X year time limit when they're not sure if the actors will be X years old at that time. That's a hard constraint to write yourself out of.

That said, I am really not expecting much from this adaptation at all, nor do I think this series needed an adaptation. I'm less concerned with the story and more so that live action is never gonna do something as beautifully animated as Avatar justice

I'm curious how they'll handle the genocide if they're not doing the comet. the comet was what gave the fire nation the ability to wipe out the air nomads.

They can still introduce the comet at the start of the season where it's relevant. It's not a big deal if they don't specify the exact timing at the start of the series.

It is if they spend earlier seasons working towards the comet, get cancelled, and then they just have shoddily done seasons with people complaining about how pointless all of it was. Dark Angel suffered that fate, the season 2 (I think, maybe 3) ending was setting up something big in the next season, only to be cancelled and all of that effort wasted.

If they're guaranteed a certain amount of seasons, then cool, if they're planning to introduce it in Season 3, necessitating a successful 1st & 2nd season first, then it's possible it never even happens based off the reaction of what we've already been learning of the show.

All the more reason not to introduce the comet early on. Even without the comet, there's still pressure to stop the war cuz it's kinda ruining every nation. When they start the final season, they can just go "omg the comet is THIS summer?!" and then kick their efforts into high gear.

That said, the series will feel incomplete if they get cancelled at any point before dethroning Ozai and Azula. The comet is just another level to it.

Isn't it too early to be talking about Sozin's comet. Wouldn't that be a season two or three thing.

Because the actors age and grow and the show will taken years to finish they can't have the show take place just in a few months, in universe. So there really is less reason to rush Aang's training. A smart thing to do would to end a season at a stop where Aang can realistically have trained off screen for an extended period of time to account for the actors aging.

So taking away or pushing back the looming threat that forces the story to rush forward isn't a bad thing.

Right and no need to for the LA show. Again it's not smart to have the LA series take place over a few months. Gordon Cormier who plays Aang is 14 and will grow. If the show adapts the whole series it's smart for it to take place over a period of years, not months.

Its just something you have to keep in mind with live action shows.

and yet its korra who gets called a mary sue

lets break this down

aang struggles with earh bending for ONE EPISODE then never has issues with it again

korra struggles with air bending for an entire season and even after that she is never exactly a top tier air bender

aang is always right any time a character disagrees with aang they go through development to learn he was right

korra is constantly wrong and has to learn lessons and figure out how to be the avatar in a changing world

aang recovers from the trauma he suffers in the season 2 final

korra spends all of season 4 recovering from her trauma at the fall out of season 3

hell korra suffers trauma i n every season final except the last

Same reason a moon made of rock powers up waterbenders instead of earthbenders. And the sun is a big ball of gas, but it's the source of firebending instead of airbending.

That is still partially because of how narrative design for Korra was designed to side step a good chick of her Avatar powers when she already mastered three of the four elements prior to being discovered as the next Avatar at like what age four or five?

Seems like a practical move. As they said, they don't want to introduce it too early in a live action setting when dealing with child and teenaged actors, and they'll probably introduce it as a penultimate season cliffhanger or something.

yeah i suspect most benders would have similar level of competence at like age 6 except they can only bend 1 element.

afaik aang became an air bending master at age 12 so at age 6 he prob was pretty competent w/ it already. he just didn't know he could bend other elements at the time (just didnt come naturally like for korra).

Edit: I forgot that Katara was a late starter. She sucked at water bending till later. Maybe she's an uncommon case tho

Also, wasn't she bested at fire and earthbending by the two brother teammates pretty regularly in the first book?

Korra wasn't remotely a Mary Sue. She constantly faced, suffered from, and eventually overcame ordeals that were drawn out over entire storylines and got her ass kicked pretty damn regularly. Nothing came easy to her other than a flashback showing her using three elemental powers as a child for a laugh.

She only just learned to use basic bending when she was discovered as the Avatar. She mastered Water Fire and Earth by the start of the show, so she was training to use them for ten years. Plus with Air Bending and the spiritual side of the Avatar she struggled far more then Aang ever did. Aang only struggled to learn Earth Bending and that was just for an episode. Took her a whole season to even learn air bending and the spiritual side took even longer.
