Those popups went away after about a day for me. Someone on this site also mentioned a Android APK that basically gives you a customizable free Youtube premium on mobile as well so now I can see even fewer ads on Youtube.

I've had to manually update uBlock's filters a couple of times to make the popups go away, but otherwise it's been pretty smooth. Youtube's being extremely aggressive this time, but uBlock is keeping up very well.

Ublock doesn't exist on mobile so I always get an add that plays right away since Adblock Plus sucks. It's not a big deal since all I have to do is reload the video and it goes away right away.

Well yeah, AB Plus is not only different from Adblock, but Plus was basically bought out by multiple companies including Google, meaning those companies' advertisements will seep through no matter what setting you adjust. When I learned of this some years ago, I stopped trusting Plus.

I refresh the page and it doesn't pop up again on that video.

Oddly I only get this popup on one computer that I regularly use. It's configured the same as the other 3 so I don't know what causes it.

Haven't gotten anything yet with uBlock Origin. I wonder if it's because I'm still using Windows 7. Maybe it makes me ineligible for certain updates.

There's an incredibly common sales/PR tactic.

Let's say you are selling something to a customer for $10. One day, you raise your price to $100. The customer freaks out, refuses to pay, threatens to stop buying from you forever, etc etc. So you "compromise" and agree to lower your price to $15. The customer agrees because $15 is better than $100, and at least you showed a willingness to listen. The customers win!

...except now you're charging them $5 more than you were before. At the cost of a little bit of bad PR (that will blow over because everyone is a goldfish who can't remember more than 20 minutes ago), and maybe a few customers who actually stopped using your product. But the revenue you lost is easily offset by the revenue you gained. And will continue to gain.

It's not as effective as the "boiling frog" (making small changes over time so people don't notice or complain, and then suddenly you're charging them three times as much and they never realized it). But it's definitely a thing companies have done.

I think that's price priming. You walk in and make them expect a $100 product, but low and behold, you can get it for the low low price of $15.

It's a little different. That's manipulating their expectations so you can pleasantly surprise them. This is proposing something outrageous, then when people get upset about it acting like they've convinced you to do something much more reasonable that they don't notice is significantly worse than the old status quo because they're satisfied that you "saw reason."

Mostly because it works as a metaphor regardless of the methodological nuances of the source material. If you gradually makes somebody's environment worse, they're more likely to not notice/mind than if it happens suddenly.

I would still expect people reach a breaking point. Maybe by being gradual you put off getting there. Or they don't break at the same point they would have if it were sudden. But I do not expect that they would get so accustomed to it that they don't realize they're boiling. They'll still be aware that it's the way things are going before it gets that far.
