I love me some A24 movies, and it's a bit disheartening to hear them say that they are losing enough money that they need to change up to bigger projects. They've been able to give a platform to some wonderful and some strange films that wouldn't have a platform otherwise. Even if you don't like all of them, they're amazing to have around.

The rumored IPs they're trying for are Friday the 13th and Halloween, and I honestly think they'd be able to do some great stuff with those franchises. I think a lot of people see the success of the studio and would trust some of their IPs to them without question.

Also, they are the only studio that the writer's guild let their members continue working for through the strike because they gave them everything they wanted ahead of time. So they are arguably the most morally best studio!

I'd love to see them land one of the big slasher franchises and make something cool out of it. It's been too recent to reboot Halloween again I think; Friday has been in hell for ages it seems, would be cool if what's historically been the least well reviewed critically horror franchise could find a home where it might actually be able to come up with a good film.

I always thought A24 made bank considering their small budgets. The budget on Beau is Afraid was pretty insane though, I mean it was like 10 or 15 million more than Everything Everywhere All At Once I believe!

Beau is Afraid is a movie that is certainly not for everyone, and probably didn't need the budget it got. When they have smaller movies, I'm sure that hurts a lot more when they have to take a hit like this. It's not just Beau that ended up losing a lot of money though.

I think doing bigger IPs will help them a lot to keep supporting these smaller creators though.

Beau would've struggled to make back its budget even if it was a Hereditary-level hit. They definitely went too far with that one.

Definitely a bummer to see it so clearly demonstrated that just backing really fucking cool and original stuff isn't enough to cut it in the industry, even with a portfolio as rock-solid as theirs. But I do agree with Snake that I found it weird to find out that they're losing so much on so many movies when their budgets are (usually) comparatively miniscule while consistently getting a pretty good amount of attention - even from the mainstream, pretty often!

It's not that their style doesn't cut it, it's that it's TOO successful.

They are now a multi billion corporation. That's why they are making compromises, not lack of money.

A bit disappointing for sure. However I dont know what they were expecting with Beau is Afraid, Im extremely glad they made it but that was never going to make money upfront, you have to treat it as a loss necessary to draw talent not bet part of your business on it.

Edit: Though thinking about it, X is already a franchise and theyve already announced a sequel to Talk to Me so maybe this isnt as much of a swerve as it seems.

How does that work? A24's problem is that they have to give talent bigger and bigger budgets or that talent leaves for bigger companies who can offer them more money, like the Daniels signing a five year deal with Universal rather than sticking with A24.

For some reason people are claiming the Halloween IP has been secured by A24 but a bunch of people are debunking it and saying they're still talking.

Tbh Halloween is the least interesting prospective IP they could get given the very recent movies. I would love them to be able to do something with a different horror franchise.
