Rules:
  1. Rate each character on a scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the lowest, and 10 being the highest. Anything above 10 gets rounded down to a 10, and anything below a 1 gets rounded up to a 1.
  2. Anything beyond the ten's place will be rounded accordingly: .04 or lower gets rounded down to .0 and .05 or higher gets rounded up to .1
  3. You don't have to rate every character. You can skip any that you don't know or don't feel like rating.
  4. "Character" is defined loosely, but priority will be given to playable characters and major villains. Depending on participation/demand, this may be expanded.
  5. If you miss a topic or topic(s) you can still rate characters from previous topics. Just please try to keep them in the order I have them in the spreadsheet. It makes my life a lot easier.
  6. Feel free to nominate characters you'd like to see done next. There's no guarantee they'll be next, but they might receive higher priority.
  7. Please make it clear which characters you are giving each rating.

I've been on the fence on whether I should rate being in a similar boat (played a little past that but not far enough to see why people actually like these characters for non meme reasons)

I may retroactively rank them at some point because yeah if you're still bland after 100 hours it's fair imo. Also wondering how much of the love for them is people rationalizing the time they sunk in the game lol.

I would be rating them significantly lower based off of ARR alone. ARR Alphinaud in particular I would probably give a 5 at best, but as a whole I'd score him as a 9, such is the effect the following expansions have on his character.

I know people will inevitably scoff at the notion of 100 hours not being long enough for an accurate depiction of a character, but XIV is just unique within its series in that respect.

I still think Season 1 Seinfeld characters are at least good though

It's just weird that all the ARR characters aside from like Foulkes are super bland and then get super good later apparently, and knowing how MMOs are I'm not sure how much salt I need when considering these super high ratings they seem to get.

i don't think my opinion of any ARR characters has majorly changed post-ARR but to be fair, that might be because ARR was just so boring that it left a permanent negative impression and i could never like any character i associate with it. alphinaud would probably be the only exception because he's, like, basically the main character of FFXIV and most of the past 10 years of story is a growth arc for him.

i mean why would you

like if the rating is for "how much do you like this character", and i really like this character, i like them, say, an 8/10 amount, just as much as i like other characters i gave an 8/10 to, and i want to convey that -

then why would i be like "oh but there was a time when i didn't like them... so i guess it's only a 7/10..."

i tend to rate most things based on their peak anyway.

No, I wouldn't describe him as boring at all. His heart's in the right place but he's also obnoxious, self-righteous, loves the sound of his own voice and sees himself as Eorzea's savior 5 minutes after stepping off of the boat from Sharlayan. Only for his projected image of salvation to come crashing down around him right at the pivotal moment. I don't want to be one of those people who say you aren't supposed to like ARR Alphinaud, I think that's just excusing the fact he was written like a trumped-up little shit, but although his obsession with politics gets grating over time, it's rarely bland.

Alphinaud is (purposefully) unlikable at the start but he's definitely never boring. He always has a strong personality & character arc and helps drives the plot.

Also Merylwb specifically is...not the most important character, even when accounting that rating on ARR alone is a bad idea for FF14. Like her main scenes of importance are all the way in Endwalker. Those scenes are really good but not sure why she got rated before most of the actual main characters.
