Welcome to the second season of Black Mirror, containing another three episodes. The director of this episode would go on to direct San Junipero.
The episode tells the story of Martha (Hayley Atwell), a young woman whose boyfriend Ash Starmer (Domhnall Gleeson) is killed in a car accident. As she mourns him, she discovers that technology now allows her to communicate with an artificial intelligence imitating Ash, and reluctantly decides to try it.

Absolutely love this one. Simple, powerful, scary, sad as hell. I tear up just thinking of it. And the fact that it doesn't really have an ending, but a continuing perpetuating cycle, just emphasizes the immense grief of the episode even more.

This is also one of my favorites. I thought the technology had some pretty obvious limitations from the very beginning, so the parts of the episode exploring that weren't anything special. However, the emotional side of the story more than made up for it. My favorite part was near the end when (and I haven't watched this in forever, hopefully I get it right) the girl wanted him to get angry and hit her or something, prompting the robot to ask if her living boyfriend ever hit her. And she says that he might have, if she ever acted like this towards him. That was the part of the episode that stuck with me the most. Even if the robot was a 100% perfect copy of who the boyfriend was, it could never predict who he'd have become in the future or what he might've done in situations with no data to pull from. It could never grow, never be anything more than a ghost. Thats some pretty powerful stuff!

Short, bittersweet and very poignant. I could see Martha's heart breaking in real time as she wrestled with the concept of holding on to what little she had of her late husband left or moving on and healing. Did she choose the best compromise? I don't know, but I would've had a hard time deciding what to do in her shoes as well.
