When asked why he'd be the best candidate for the job(yes bs question I know. Not my call) he said "well I dunno, I'm just perfect"

Being early 20s I interpreted it as youthful optimism...

First day: onboarding. Filling out stuff on the computer. Finished it. Went out for a vape and never came back according to my assistant.

I don't get it but.....laugh at me though because my intuition was w r o n g

I will never understand people who ghost on, after, or during the first day of work. Sometimes the job just wasn't what you thought it would be or your personal circumstances change after being hired, but if that's the case you could at least explain that.

i wouldn't say your intuition was wrong exactly, you never can tell what someones actually going to do.

and if someone seeks a job, makes bold claims, gets hired on those claims, and then ghosts?

idk, i don't really think that's something you can determine by just meeting someone for the first time

at the very least you've learned a valuable lesson, i just don't know what that lesson was

I can definitely see ghosting if the job has red flags like if you hear a manager tearing down an employee first day or something. But there's no red flags here. I don't know the motivation to walk off but I may never understand.

Hopefully he doesn't come back because I'd rather hire somebody else and I know somebody who would be reliable

You don't have to hope. Unless he's got a good excuse for dipping out, you can just fire him and move on.

Not my call unfortunately. Now if he skips training at the regional office today that he definitely was told about several times I'm pretty sure that'll be it but again not my decision

In my limited experience when people say stuff deadpan serious like "I'm a genius" unfortunately rather than being a cute personality quirk it probably just means that they don't function like a normal human being

Last guy I worked with like that just showed all the tired symptoms of narcissism, funny at first, we all liked him, but over time he couldn't work with people, he only knew how to manipulate them into and tried to put them in their place. Other people were just obstacles in his perfect design. Eventually he left and because he manipulated his way to the top, he left a huge hole that hurt the overall project and morale. Everything he made had to be redone, because, surprise, it was a rat's nest.

So I don't really blame you, because my group made the same mistake. My group did, not me, because I wanted to kick him out from day 1.

Reminds me of the time we hired a guy who had bipolar but didnt disclose it. When we interviewed him it was during his high mode so he was very optimistic, energetic. He said things like "Whatever I set my mind to i can accomplish." And juat really came off as this high motor highly functional educated man. He was perfect so we hired em.

4 weeks into the bit he went into his depressed mode. He got up from his desk one day and just went up to everyone around him saying how **** of a worker they are and how nobody helps him. He almost hit a guy in the back of the head but luckily we were able to subdue him and had to fire him on the spot.

If that's the criteria you use for someone being abnormal, then nobody is abnormal. For me, you having a problem with someone proclaiming themselves a genius makes me think you don't function like a normal human being. See how it works?

I really tire of all these armchair psychologists who think they're so skilled at identifying mental illness or issues because they watched House or The Mentalist. People like you make the world a worse place with your bullshit.

I'm not really sure how you'd take offense to that. Most people are not self-described geniuses in their professional field. The only person off the top of my head who is is Kanye, and.. yeah.

Pretty much without exception, if somebody makes an unqualified statement that they're a genius (that is, without acknowledging the actual implications or limitations of that genius-hood) that isn't a joke, they aren't going to do a very good job of recognizing when they're making a mistake, and there's a good chance that they won't accept that they have even when somebody else points it out. That's just basic cause and effect: if they had the humility to accept their mistakes, they wouldn't make unqualified claims of genius-hood.

It wasn't the fact that he had a huge ego that was the problem tbh. It was the fact that he was a huge jerk to everyone around him on top of it and treated people around him like lessers. Him calling himself a "genius" was just the earliest red flag that I saw that made me feel like he was going to be an issue. I didn't start openly calling him a narcissist until after he left and the damage was done, and I wanted everyone to feel better because he said he left because he "couldn't work with these r******". Better to just accept the fact that his brain was fucked than live in his version of reality where he was just too good for everyone.

I also think professional advice doesn't stray far from the layman learning how to identify toxic people and cut them out.

And it wasn't House, I am a WebMD expert, thank you.

I'm not gonna laugh at you, because that's very odd behavior on his part. What was the point?
