de Killer's appearances after JFA feel like a mixed bag. Superpowered anime assassins are less cool the more screentime they get, especially when the narrative starts wanting you to gloss over how they're, you know, serial killers.

Dogen is a worse offender in this regard, which is why I'm not a big fan of his, but it makes no sense for Edgeworth not to recognize de Killer in E2-1. He's wearing the Shelly symbol on his outfit!

My problem with Blackquill is that he's just too weird. Like I know all the prosecutors are pretty weird, but between his design and his penchant for cutting people down samurai style I just can't suspend my disbelief that they let this guy prosecute cases. Gameplay wise he's an extremely fun character but I guess he kind of "jumps the shark" for me a bit (which happens a lot in the non Takumi games to be fair).

That's why he falls out of top tier for me

Blackquill is less weird than Godot.

To me, Blackquill is almost like a tribute to all the previous main prosecutors. He's got Edgeworth's logic and ability to play mind games, Franziska's penchant for physical punishment, Godot's love of nonsensical parables, and Klavier's tendency to nickname everybody he meets.

But beyond that, he brings out the best in Apollo and Athena. He's just so good.

My favorite thing about Blackquill is out of all the prosecutors, he seems the most like he's doing it because he just enjoys his work. Even though he's a death row prisoner, dude's just vibing, having a good time. He's not driven by revenge or perfection or any of the usual reasons, he just seems to really enjoy a good argument battle. I dunno, it just kinda makes him fun in a different way from other prosecutors.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. He takes great satisfaction in cornering and scaring the crap out of whoever he's up against, whether it's the defense attorney, the defendant, or the witness.

He's also super adept at adjusting on the fly, like suddenly rolling with Damian confessing that he's Tenma Taro once he realized it's to his benefit to play along.

Yes, his refusal to tolerate nonsense is great, too! He's also surprisingly straight laced. He doesn't tolerate perceived (no pun intended) cheating or even his own witnesses lying.

Godot and Klavier are kinda 'having fun' in their own ways, too, but Godot's underlying motive is still a desire for revenge against Phoenix, and Klavier's a little too nice, a little too unwilling to be combative. Blackquill likes to fight and be a bit of a bastard sometimes but he's not doing it out of any genuinely held ill will towards the main cast. Again, refreshing!

I never felt like Godot was having fun for a single instant throughout AA3. He alternates between trying to teach Phoenix something, trying to get revenge against Phoenix, and just plain being depressed. In comparison, Blackquill is definitely having fun.

I think they're too inconsistent on the "Klavier is a nice guy who just wants to find the truth," and then he covers stuff up and withholds info like crazy in 4-3.

I think Godot enjoys making Phoenix look like a fool, but yeah, that's about it. He tells silly stories all the time, but that's not the same thing as having fun.

I like Blackquill a lot but I don't think the physical punishments work for him like they work for Franziska, and they were already really straining believability with Franziska. He's still like a top 3 prosecutor but I'd like him a lot more without that shit.

I really wish they had done more with Klavier because 'chill, goofy rocker dude who actually turns out to be a serious prosecutor' in the end could have been done really well but they didn't lean into it enough. Klavier has some low-key kind of cool moments of characterization in AA4 but the execution is sloppy.

Yeah, I actually do like Klavier overall. He has some good moments (top tier set of animations too), but it just felt like they didn't know what to do with him.

I mean he uses the threat of violence to intimidate people more than actual violence, but Phoenix keeps losing that one hair somehow...!

And I don't know if Taka actually attacks people or if he just gets dangerously close.

I wasn't under the impression that he actually assaulted anyone in the courtroom, he was just making violent threats at people... Which is bad! But! It feels significantly more tame compared to Franziska physically abusing people on a constant basis

I was under the impression he was, like, attacking people with a sword? He definitely has a slicing animation that gives people haircuts. The hawk is bad too though!

Fair but the slapstick is the part I don't like about it. It's just a personal preference though.

I'm good with slapstick. It's probably why I like 2-3 more than most.
