I was thinking about this, they used to be not common, but occasionally seen, and not just in Final Fantasy. I can't think of any in the last like ten years, though.

Gwent in Witcher 3 was a lot of fun

the biggest RPG in the last decade had a card game so big it got a spinoff game just to play the card game

FF14 is just a Triple Triad simulator

In all seriousness, they just spun off into their own games and there was not the same level of need to have them. Within the last ten years there is Gwent, though even that got its own game. Really fun though.

World of Final Fantasy had a simple but fun card mini game

Two factors I think. 1. Card-based stuff in video games in general was extremely pass for a while there, like maybe after 2006-ish but possibly even earlier. I feel like people have come around on them again within the last ~6 years, but: 2. Mini-games feel a lot less common in general these days (probably because people have realized that no one really liked most of them, so they were wastes of time to develop). These days if you have a really fun game idea you might as well just make a full game of it, not cram a half-baked version into a different game.

marvel snap is basically one of those and I can play it on my phone

Genshin Impact added an entire card minigame in one of its latest patches.

No need for a minigame when there are so many full games now.

Trails of Cold Steel technically has TWO.

And yeah, Genshin has one as well.

The last Shovel Knight expansion had a Triple-Triad-like game driving the plot.

Bravely Default 2 had a pretty decent one a few years ago.

Bug Fables had one too, but I didn't like it as much. I don't think I got around to beating the tournament.

Tales of Berseria's felt like too much RNG, but I did eventually beat all the NPCs.

I have rarely found an in-game card game that has merited more than a passing notice, and usually they end up being a nuisance. Oh boy, let's go play more triple triad so we can finish our collection!

My favorite was Arcomage from Might and Magic VII, which I would actually choose to play rather than continuing with the game proper.

I did a playthrough of VIII specifically for Triple Triad once. I followed a guide from here about how to get all the unique cards as they became available and how to eliminate all the bad rules from the whole game.

they weren't in every RPG back then you know, but they were there in select spots

..just like these days, they're not in every RPG but they're there

Sounds like you should play Fire Emblem Engage.

You can play games on your phone now so there's no need to sit on your couch to play a card game

while this is true and i have mahjong soul this hasn't stopped me from dumping way too much time into yakuza mahjong for absolutely no reason

I'd also imagine a lot of it came down to monetization and DLC type stuff too. A minigame is only worth throwing the dev time into if you can monetize it otherwise a lot of developers probably spend the time on optional stuff they can generate extra money from

Or you're playing the game without assistance and doing it the way that feels natural.

Regardless, Triple Triad sucks. Other in-game card games are seldom better, though.

You don't play FFVIII in ways that feel natural, there's your first mistake

Excuse me if I played FF8 without checking with the internet first on the correct way to play it. I didn't feel like waiting 10 minutes for my dial-up modem to load somebody's geocities page.

other genres and mmos claimed them more that they're less of an rpg thing but they still kinda are a thing really
