A new description update on Linkedin from Warner Bros. Senior Global Brand Manager has revealed that Hogwarts Legacy sold 256% more than predicted.
Spotted by Twitter user @bogorad22, the description states, Achieved 256% to plan sell-thru at launch and exceeded 12M units in sales in first two weeks earning $850M+, secured additional 1.8B impressions through a WBD gaming 1st of its kind Fusion program, and broke all-time Twitch record for most peak concurrent viewers ever for a single player game with 1.3M views.
Earlier this month, GamesIndustry.biz reported that Hogwarts Legacy was so successful that the Q1 2023 total sales for video games outsold Q1 2022, despite Q1 2022 having games like Elden Ring and Horzion: Forbidden West releases.
Its been a couple of months since Warner Bros. officially announced the 12m sales figure for Hogwarts Legacy, but we could hear more on its sales in the companys upcoming 2023 annual meeting of stockholders meeting on May 8.
In total, the amount spent on video games in the U.S. surpassed $4.6 billion. This marks a 6% increase year-over-year. It will be interesting to see what the rest of 2023 brings in terms of best-selling games, but it is needless to say that this year is going to be a big one for gaming. With new releases on the horizon such as Diablo IV and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, video game sales should continue to sky-rocket and itll be interesting to see where Hogwarts Legacy eventually ends up.

As I've said before, boycotts end up basically working as advertising. That shit was absolutely everywhere the first couple of weeks.

It's why they're doing the whole reboot so quick. They're banking on the craziness to maximize profits.

That's the reality of HP going forward.

I'm sure there's a large segment of HP fans who have no idea JK Rowling is a TERF.

Honestly it really depends.

A group of always online people going around attacking people over a video game as a "boycott", that won't work.

A group of D&D players cancelling subscriptions because they don't like the upcoming changes forcing WotC to go back on them, that works.

Ultimately anything that tries to extend pass a small group that can form solidarity over an issue that directly affects them is bound to fail. Boycott works when the scale is small.

I don't get why they underestimated it so much.

I know people who don't game but were HP heads who were excited for it. Then the game didn't suck and hit the right notes. Of course it made gangbusters money.

Did they underestimate number of HP fans? Or was the game a lot better than expected or something?

Some day people will understand that video game boycotts don't work, no matter how noble the cause, unless the game is trash. Even then it probably won't work because buzz can carry the first week.

L4D2 started that modern trend, had a huge boycott movement, and on launch day damn near everyone involved had the game because people have basically no impulse control with video games lol. You get people thinking about it, they buy it. That simple.

i really doubt that people who somehow managed to hear nothing about the game all through development bought it just because of internet anger

HP is just a huge franchise and the game actually looked really good. If it was garbage I doubt it would have sold as much

People were absolutely raging that Valve was moving from L4D to L4D2 so quickly, saying they were going to become one of those "release a game every year" companies to keep series going, cheap cash ins, people calling the character cast a bunch of racist stereotypes. It was pretty brutal for a bit right after it was announced. I think some of the boycott groups are even still up on Steam lol.

Oddly enough people would probably lose their absolute shit in a good way if Valve released a game on back-to-back years.

Not gonna lie, I do want to play it. I came across my Ps2 copy of Chamber of Secrets which led me to think how cool it'd be for a modern game. Then I thought about HL.

Still boycotting, though.
